Heard a rumour over on FM about a possible anouncement in Feb about this lens.

Do you think it's wishful thinking or is it about time Canon gave us something to replace the gap left by the 50 f1.0 ?

To be honest I'm happy with my 1.4 but I'd like the colour and contrast of a "L" version. I'm not that bothered about it being any faster, 1.4 is plenty fast enough and that was the downfall of the f1.0. Not that it was TOO fast, just that there was no real need for it and it was very expensive. It would be great if they brought it out as a 1.4L for about the same money as the 24/35 1.4's.

What are your thoughts ?

Gary.

Gimme a metal mount, fluorite, red ringed beauty with 7 or more diaphragm blades and I'd be stoked.

Anywhere from 1.4 to 1.8 would be ok with me. I guess the 1.4 already does that but with no red ring. Oh and it's one stop from a 1.2.

Hmmmm. so maybe the 1.4 isn't that bad? Do you think Canon will make that jump? Rumour is all it is I bet.

Full frame and some primes.

I wouldn't mind a Canon 35mm 1.4 USM with 7 or 8 aperture blades, nice USM, nice build, and for the same price as the Canon 50mm 1.4 USM :D

It's pretty wishful thinking, especially since Canon has been releasing zooms almost exclusively over the past few years.

But it'd be nice to see an 50 L of some sort with L class build quality, real USM (not the micro USM) and slightly upgraded optics. Crazy as it may seem, I'd gladly pay twice the price of the 1.4 version for it. I don't think they'd need to even go near $1000 (it's still a 50mm lens after all). $700 would be about right.

A prime 50mm f/1.2L would be a nice addition to the line up of 'L' Lenses. I only just visited the Australian Canon web site to search for a 50mm 'L' Lens.

If this were true, there would finally be an L for the 50. I doubt it would kill off the production of the 1.4 because I'm sure it sells well.

They can have both as long as the 1.2 would have full ring usm, better build quality, and sharp wide open.

Exactly, an L 50mm must have been pointless in the eyes of users. I think the 50mm 1.0L was only purchased new by the same folks that had a 1200mm L in the kit.

If a 50 1.2 is priced similarly to the 85 1.2, I think it would sell pretty well though. Although it would really have to outdo that 50 1.4 which is a pretty damn good lens, especially for its price. I love mine.
