I am a new member to this forum so please excuse me if this has been discussed before. What are you hearing regarding an upgrade to the 100-400 f4.5-5.6? The push pull is a little outdated and it would be nice to see an upgrade.

Additionally are there plans for an l series 100-300 (or 120-300) f4.0 that might also work with the 1.4x and 2.0x converters?

Thanks for your insight.

When I was shopping for the 100-400 a few months ago everything I turned up and on all the boards including this one the consensus it that Canon is not likely "fix what ain't broken" when it comes to the 100-400. I read somewhere a 200-400 might be coming sooner than later (2012?) (http://www.the-digital-picture.com …der-1.4x-Lens-Review.aspx (external link)) but well beyond my price range.

Canon rumors had this to say:

- EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS II (the current version starts at f/4.5)
I’m told this will also arrive sometime in 2012. It will be a replacement for both the 100-400 and 400 f/5.6L. If it performs like the current 400 f/5.6 prime does at 400mm, then we’ll have a winner.

Take it for what its worth.

The 100-400mkII has been a perpetual rumour for years.

The current one is an excellent lens , the IS system is a bit old and clunky is all.

I bought my 100-400 in 2006, despite the rumours of an imminent upgrade.

While I haven't used the 100-400, I have an old manual-focus Tokina 80-210mm for Minolta MD somewhere, and I never had a problem with its push-pull nature. If anything, I found the one-touch zoom and focus to be an advantage.

Trombone (push-pull) zoom is not a problem. It is a feature. You WILL like it. All my good old zooms are push-pull.

As others have said already, that 100-400L version II rumor has been circulating for many years, so I wouldn't count on it happening. And even if a version II did come out, considering how Canon has been pricing upgrades of their L lenses, I would expect a significant price increase.

The push/pull zoom actually works rather well once you get used to it. The only real downside to the existing lens is that its IS system is rather old.

See kids?
That's what you get when you have a "fast trigger" and don't wait for the rumors to become reality: 6 years of happy use (I assume).

Having said that, it'll be out any day now...

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

It's anyone's guess, if or when Canon will ever update the 100-400. Don't hold your breath.

Canon has announced that they have a 200-400/4L IS in the works... And it will have a built-in 1.4X teleconverter. Prototypes have been seen and photographed. No date of launch or price has been announced yet... Best guesses are that it will run between $11,000 and $12,000 US and might be available before the end of 2012 or early 2013.

You might want to look at Sigma 120-400 OS and 150-500 OS. These are both much more recent lenses that appear to have similar IQ to the 100-400 and some feel the Sigma OS is superior. They are both black and have the more traditional two-ring zoom/focus. The 120-400 currently runs about $900 US and the 150-500 about $970 (Amazon prices).
