My setup is:

Windows 7 (64 bit)
PS 5
Camera Raw 6.6

First, I doubleclick a CR2 file, and it opens in Camera Raw, where I apply global edits to the RAW image. Once I am happy with the RAW edits, I click "Open Image" and it opens in PS 5 with the global edits applied.

Next, when I attempt to open that same CR2 file in ACR, it opens with the same prior global edits already applied. What I want is for the image to open in it's "default" state - without edits applied - as though I were opening it for the very first time.

SHIFT + doubleclick opens the image with the edits applied.
CTRL + doubleclick opens the image with the edits applied.
ALT + doubleclick opens the a "Properties" box, and does not open the image at all.

I am sure it has to be something stupid and obvious, so I don't know what I am missing.

Help.

Rad

Click Default just above Exposure, then hold the Alt and click Open Copy.

Default? Exposure? Would that be in Bridge?

One thing I failed to mention in my first post is that I am opening the file from a standard Windows Explorer window.

The "default" button is in ACR, I think it's bottom right, though it could be in the triangle flyout button top right. Or it may be a hyperlink above the exposure slider. I can't remember, not at my processing PC.

If you double click in explorer you open in Photoshop. If you browse in bridge and right click ACR opens within bridge. It's just faster.

Why do you want to open it without edits anyway? I can't see how a good workflow makes changes then throws them away.

Just delete the XMP file with the same name as the raw file if you don't need the settings. I almost never touch those files directly though.

It's in ACR. If you double click in Windows Explorer doesn't it open in ACR? Just above the Exposure Slider you should see Auto and Default. Click Default to reset. Then hold the Alt key down which should change the Open Image button at the bottom to Open Copy, click Open Copy. That will open up a file with the defaults leaving any changes previously made intact.

I am making multiples of the same shot, different luminocities and saturations, for a blended exposure. I find that beginning each version from the same start point (the default) gives me the control that I want for the end result of each version.

Yeah, I figured that out, but it seemed such a kludge, that I assumed there has to be a way that did not involve file deletions.

Thanks,

Rad

You can also make different settings and save as a Snapshot.

There is no need to delete anything. Edit in ACR, then save as a Snapshot. Click the Default, make new edit, and save as another Snapshot.

OK, that will work. When I am in ACR, where, exactly, is the Save Snapshot option? I don't see it in the "Save Image..." dialogue box.

Never mind. I found it. It is an unlabled button in the lower right corner of the snapshots pallate. My god! Could Adobe make that any less intuitive!

Thanks for the tip!

;) Sometimes they do what they can. It is a handy little feature. Any different Snapshot made gets stored in the xmp file as well, so you can always go back. Plus it's a quick way to compare two different conversions or keep different crops.

If you open a Raw file in PS but want to "teak" it in ACR, use the Smart Object function. That way, if you have the Smart Object as a layer in PS, you can double-click it to open it in ACR and the ACR edits will "translate" back to PS, although tthe PS layers will not translate to ACR.
