Who uses the in camera histogram when shooting?
I have never used it and am wondering the benefits.
I usually shoot people (in manual mode) and just check that my exposure is dead center.
I know that theres a reason for the histogram and I am far from a professional(I think I have made it to the beginners stage by now)
So please people, SCHOOL ME!

If I'm shooting in complex situation like say ,birds in a dark forest against the sky, I check it to make sure there is enough exposure and to see which areas are blown-out. Theres more to be gathered from its features like color saturation on rgb histograms, and shadows or highlights on the main one but its mostly about exposure for general use.

I refer to mine when the scene is heavily backlit and the sun makes it hard to see the screen on the camera. It can be a great tool. I probably should use it more.

Another good tool as well. The histogram tells the story....to the left it's underexposed,,, to the right it's overexposed,,, down the middle solves the riddle,,,, use your histogram

I usually shoot people (in manual mode) and just check that my exposure is dead center.

And how do you check that if you don't use the histogram?

I use it all the time to make sure I'm not clipping blacks or whites. The most important part for me is to make sure it is exposed enough for portraits. This usually means going really close to the far right and maybe a bit more depending on lighting.

For stock/studio we check for blinkies most of the time.

I don't typically use it, but when I am shooting a situation where there is a lot of details in the blacks or predominately bright I will check it to make sure there is enough dynamic range. Canons aren't known for being able to pull blacks well in PP so it's best to make sure the detail is there even if it involves blowing out the picture a little bit.

Same here.

I think in some cases the highlights look better clipped though. But it depends on the situation really, I find the Camera to get there 90% of the time anyway. I forgot to look at the Histogram too many times to mention!

Use it everytime. Because I am sitting on a laptop with a bad screen I need to use the histogram in my rawkonverter too.
