I have a very strong dislike for touchscreen interfaces. I find them fiddly to use and of course a touchscreen requires your eyes be on the device as they cannot be used by feel.

With all that said, I don't care if Canon adds a touch screen to their dSLR line so long as they do not cripple or delete the existing controls. So long as the touch screen is a additional feature that I can choose to use or ignore, then fine. I might even find a few things like focus point selection where I like it.

Don't see a touch screen as an alternative for buttons.

But it's a great supplement.

People using live view with contrast AF could point wherever they want on the display to select what to focus on. Just as many mobile phones do.

When viewing photos, it would be way faster to zoom in on specific features in a photo.

A number of menu choices that now requires us to use up/down buttons or scroll wheels could be quicker to perform with a touch screen.

Touch screens on cameras are nothing new. Leaf backs have had touch screens for about five years. The leaf backs have a real simple menu system. the screens do suck though.

I would have to say that medium format systems do not have many consumer driven features....

I think its a great step forward. The young guns will embrace it, the vets will see it as change and some will not like it. Touch screen technology has evolved to a very reliable level within cell phones. The public has embraced it. Just look at the all the cell phones with no physical keyboard on them. So we will see it it almost every product we use in the next few years,

Personally I get fed up enough as it is with grease and marks on my rear screen without the additional debris caused by dabbing my grubby little fingers all over it.

Cheers mate, saved me replying that :)

If touch screen is in use for focusing it is perfect.
The rest is duplicating control buttons, but nothing wrong with it.
As long as they keep both. It is cheaper to use touch screen for manufacturer.

BAD idea for me ...i use my left eye to shoot with...so my nose would be touching the screen all the time... unless you can lock the screen before you shoot..???

My E-M5 has touch screen, has a light sensor on the back just like most SLRs that recognises when the face is looking into the viewfinder and shuts off the back screen

But it's very much a question of screen treatment - with some treatments, you have very little issues with fingerprints on the screen.

Why not?
If it's there and easy to use, i'll use it. If not, I'll just disable it.

Thinking about dumping my 60d and picking this up with the 40mm so I can do video with the AF.

From what I've seen so far (for example, the YouTube video of the new Canon) it appears to be slower than using the usual knobs 'n' wheels.

And, on my 7D, I can select ISO/AF/aperture/shutter speed/compensation/drive/AE-type/etc./ with my index finger pushing the little buttons on the top, and then scroll through the options and select what I want without taking my eye from the viewfinder.
Don't think that's possible with touch screen.......

So, if Canon add touch screen and drop knobs 'n' wheels, I'll be changing camera manufacturer.

If they add touch screen but keep the knobs 'n' wheels...well, that's fine I guess.

Regards,
Simon

If it's there, then you won't be able to feel which button you're pressing without looking at it.

Even if they implement the vibrating stuff as in the Andriod phone, that might be annoying.

I don't think you need to worry except maybe on entrance level cameras where they can save money by using a touch screen.

But the better camera models will never replace mechanical switches/knobs/wheels - only complement them. The tactile feedback etc are a much too important part, as is the requirement to adjust a number of settings with the camera held to the face.

What they really need to do is make the software open sourced.
So developers like me can have some fun. But I dont think they ever will.
