Although I currently don't own touchscreen devices (my CP although global and has its own e-mail account, TV reception, etc is still a standard Jpn type cellphone unit), I welcome this feature in T4i.

This will be a win-win situation for Canon and eventually also a win-win for Canon users. The feature set of 4ti (such as all cross type AF sensors) is an indication of Canon's strategy (for the upcoming 70D, MILC, 7D2) and this year and next would be exciting times.

I just switched to FF (5D2) but the 4ti together with the pancake STM lens is an attractive walk-around device.

You guys have no idea how well a touchscreen performs.

With my olympus OM-D Em-5 (better IQ than a 7d/60d when static/slow moving subjects are concerned) I can compose a photo in a matter of seconds. When your eye is in the viewfinder it disables all touchscreen capabilities. This is when I use the buttons to select AF focus points as my eye is in the viewfinder.

A touchscreen can select an AF focus point instead of using your thumb to select with buttons (or joystick)

Guys may laugh now but just watch a higher end full frame have this function in the next 5 years (ex: 5dmk4)

I agree with this. I am a believer in touch screens, even posted it a long time ago. I dont see what's there NOT to like about it. It's the logical evolution of technology. Next will be apps, and I'm not joking. Intervalometer app, hdr?, server app, ftp to transport photos to PC to clear space while shooting, people remover app, DOF calculator, the possibilities can be endless.

A touchscreen can select an AF focus point instead of using your thumb to select with buttons (or joystick)

And how are you going to do this while looking through the viewfinder?

The whole purpose of buttons, dials, and a joystick is to allow you to control the camera while looking at the subject through the viewfinder. A touch screen only allows you to control the camera when looking at the touch screen.

Don't get me wrong, I think everything will have a touch screen one day. It's just not practical with an optical viewfinder. If you have an EV flip out screen, I could see it being useful.

I'm bummed that this isn't on the 5D3.

But then, I'd like an articulating screen too.

Articulating touch screen would be heaven for live view shooting. Bring it on.

Yep, I'm basically going to be using an android device for that instead.

It sounds like a good idea but I have a Sony p&s that I specifically chose for its touch screen ... but I find it really irritating now.

You have to clean the screen constantly; it's too easy to select something by accident and most frustratingly, you sometimes have to tap more than once to have the command accepted.

I wish I'd bought the cheaper model with buttons instead.

However, I'm all for articulating screens and I think a touch screen would be the most practical solution for these.

But some of the problems are because the Sony has a bad implementation, and the false presses are a bigger problem because P&S cameras are so much smaller.

Bad treatment of the glass making finger prints stick to the surface.

Bad detection of presses/taps.

One issues with a small P&S is that with a large screen, there isn't so much room for holding the camera without touching the screen. So a P&S will have much more problems with accidental presses compared to a DSLR. With a P&S I would basically want an enable button so I have to hold the camera with one hand and press an enable button before I can use the touch screen. So the touch function is enabled for 10 seconds or as long as you continue to enter commands. Without such a touch lock, I have a hard time seeing how a user will not get lots of accidental presses when the display covers almost the full backside of the camera.

Maybe the camera could have automatic (capacitive) sensors so if you hold it with a normal grip on the right-hand side, the touch function gets enabled.

strawman argument. I never said the whole movie industry, nor implied the 5D2 somehow took the place of standard movie equipment. Conversely, If you think the 5D2 had no influence on video, you've been living under a rock.

Errm, what you said was...

Gregg.Siam wrote in post #14561393 (external link)
Go tell that to the 5D MKII people that use video and the entire movie industry that utilizes the video feature. Video is what put the 5D MKII on the map.

I appreciate we all use the English language with our own subtle nuances, but hey...

For everyone talking about "it has to shut off the touchscreen when I put my eye to the viewfinder" (or "i'd bump it with my nose), the Rebels have had those weird rectangular infrared sensors under the viewfinder on many models, that turn off the info screen when your eye approaches the viewfinder.

"A pair of horizontal infrared sensors just below the Canon T2i's viewfinder, which we've highlighted with a green rectangle in the image at right, detect your eye as it approaches the viewfinder, and deactivate the LCD information display if you have the LCD Auto-off option enabled. (The Auto-off option is found on Setup menu screen 1.)"

Personally I always hated that feature and felt it never turned off the screen fast enough.

To the topic though, I wouldn't want a touchscreen on an SLR.

I like it. It's a natural evolution of user interface.

You'll get it anyway, unless you decide to never more get a DSLR.

But hopefully, a number of people will have one or more years to beta-test the system, until Canon have tweaked the sensor system so the touch system does turn off fast enough. Because accidental selections with the nose will be totally unacceptable.
