Personally I think the new Canon 24-70 II is a bit of a disappointment. No IS and a pretty big price increase makes me lose quite a bit of interest in a lens that I was waiting for. (Of course i may change my mind if it just performs awesome) So in reading about maybe an entry level ff nikon at a very reasonable price (in the rumors section) it just sparked my mind to think about what if Nikon came out with a new 24-70 that has image stabilization. What effect do you think that would have on Canon sales?

There are good reasons why neither Nikon nor Canon offers a 24-70mm with IS. Are you ready to spend $3K+ for a 24-70mm f/2.8 IS lens? That's what it would cost, whether Canon or Nikon sold it. Doesn't sound like a big seller to me, and I suspect Nikon and Canon don't think so either. I'm eager to see the reviews on the new Canon 24-70mm; the mtf charts look very promising to me.

Do you think thats what they would need to sell it for to make a profit or do you think thats the markup they would do to make a good profit? I would think a canon or a nikon 24-70 with is would be flying off the shelves. The canon 70-200 is ii is at 2300 dollars the same asking price as the canon 24-70 ii with no is. I think if they wanted the is could have been included in the 24-70 for the same price or a little more.

If tamron can do it for 1300. Surley to CAnon could do it just as cheap. Add 1000 profit and batter parts maybe and you could still get it under 2500 I think.

As much as I don't like Canon's price increases, if the 70-200 2.8 IS mkII is any indication, I think the price of the 24-70 mkII will be justified. Optically it will be sweeeeeeet.

Don't be an apologist; Canon could easily have thrown a bone with an IS module.

Yeah, the profit margins on this lens, for $2000+, are probably absolutely insane.

They road tested many versions of 24-70 configurations in the field. It seemed that there was as very strong recommendation to release it without IS from the testing group.

I don't know why, but I guess that it was just too darn heavy.
