Apparently I tried to put a CF card into my reader incorrectly and bent a pin in the reader and perhaps damaged the CF card ,then when I tried to view the photos in my 350D I think it shut down my camera as when I turn it on oly the "ON" green light comes on,nothing else. When I try to turn it off the green light stays on.Is there a rest button in the camera? is it repairable? and by whom.
Eagerly awaiting information.

I may be wrong, but I suspect that Canon will charge more to replace the card reader module than the camera is worth. Call them.

Have you pulled out the card and checked which pin is bent. You can try to straighten it, but it will probably break as they are very brittle. I have an xti that had a bent pin which broke off, but the camera now works. It was one of the middle pins which is a power pin for the card and apparantly it will work with only one power pin. You can get them fixed, but Canon will be too expensive as they have a minimum charge for fixing anything. There are independent companies that replace the pin module, but it will still cost you in the $100 range.

There is a good thread on CF card damage and bent pin at https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1127101.

I had some input to that thread but one of the best sites on the issue is at http://www.tomguilmette.com/archives/445 (external link) where a bent pin is discussed on a 5DMkII. Note the writer of this thread was able to get a no-charge repair from Canon.

For a 7D the repair was $366 in June 2011 (see http://therenderq.com …pin-in-compact-flash-slot (external link)).

Personally, on a 350D I would attempt the repair. Worse case is you will break off a pin and a professional will need to fix things but that is essentially the only alternative you currently have. The site http://www.ehow.com …digital-rebel-camera.html (external link) outlines some points abouit a repair attempt. The only thing I would add it remove the battery prior to doing anything, then hit the shutter button a few times to bleed off any residual power in the camera circuitry.

Thanks for your response but the camera is fine except it will not turn on. The damage was done to an external card reader and after inserting the CF card into the camera after removing it from the damaged card reader it was then ( I presume) it damaged the camera.

I have just checked the camera for bent pins but everything looks fine. I tried different batteries and different CF cards but still it will not start. All the CF cards bed in good so I think that would eliminate any broken off pins stuck in a CF card.

If you are SURE that there are no bent pins and you've tried other cards then this could just be an coincidence.
Have you pulled the backup battery (small coin sized battery) and let the camera sit a while. Is this battery OK (the camera is getting on a bit now) ?

I was gonna' suggest the same thing. Pull the backup and main battery and let the thing sit for at least several minutes. Then just to be sure, take something conductive and short out the contacts for the backup battery. Finally replace the batteries and see what happens. (And as already said, make sure backup battery is good). I've seen this problem before in industrial controllers (but admittedly not in cameras).

Edit to add another thought (just a guess) - is it possible poppy needs to re-install the firmware?

it's going to be very difficult to re-install the firmware if the camera doesn't power up... :p

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

He said the power light comes on, so it's at least trying. That's why I was thinking firmware. Hey, what's he got to lose at this point?

Thanks for the response and I appreciate everyones input. I am feeling a bit embarrased as I have no idea where the "Backup battery" is and did not know there was such a thing. I have also stuffed up by saying that the camera is the 350D when actually the 350D and the 550D are fine and it was my 400D that became damaged. All the best.

Do you still have the manual? It is on page 155. If not you can Google it and download the manual. Good luck.

page 155 of the 400D manual. See attached.
It isn't clear - have you looked carefully at the pins in the camera body, preferably with a good light?
