I'm curious to know if there's any difference in the symptoms if you don't put the CF card in the camera at all. If it runs without the card, wether you can reach the menu option to enable shooting without the card present & check the general operation (shutter / mirror etc)

Hello Joseph it makes no difference if the CF card is in or out.The camera will not start.

Took the camera to Camera House today and for $130 they would check it out and then there were 2 possibilities...the 1st one was the ON/OFF mechanism and the 2nd was the internal electronic circuit board. Both prices could not be justified so If anyone wants a 400D for parts or maybe someone has a 400D that is damaged for some other reason than the electronics. Thanks again for all the input.

Look at this thread before you give it away....

I've bought a couple of cameras through this program and they are excellent.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

Hopefully by "Camera House" you mean the one in California, not Australia. The Canon Loyalty Program mentioned by Mark_48 is only available to US residents.

the 1st one was the ON/OFF mechanism

On that possibly there are some online procedures for cleaning the on/off switch on some cameras. It involves putting just a bit of alcohol in the inside of the battery compartment. Probably worth a try before parting with the camera. Go to the thread at http://forums.dpreview.com …age=41684295&changemode=1 (external link) and review what was done. Some YouTube videos are there as well. Note that this is not for a 350D but if the basic physical arrangement is similar it might work.

Looked great until I read that it was not available in Australia.

Sorry about that.... I wish everyone would put just their basic location in the world in with their profile info. It surely does help at times when responding to some questions :D

Try to clean the switch as I suggested, everyhting to gain and not much to lose.

By the way the topic header mentions 350D and your comments about a visit to Camera House mentions 400D. I'm not sure what if any difference that make.
