Hey what bracket are you using by the way? I like how that one allows you to point the flash downwards.

I am to work on the EX430 diffusion and I am interested in this design.

One thing I would like clarification on is the vellum with the foil and slots. does the foil reflect the light back toward the flash, or is the main reason that it refelcts the the light toward the subject?

Are the slots to let more light through than the velum would allow?

It's an old Stroboframe bracket I had laying around, I had to alter it a little to be able to point the flash downward like that. You should be able to rig something up with the Ram mount system (external link). I saw this system and it looks like it would work pretty well for positioning the flash wherever you want. I have only used the RAM mounts with my GPS unit in my boat and have not tried them for photographic applications.

Bas...I had most of my response to your questions typed out and the electricity went off (it's storming)and deleted it all... so I will reply to you after this storm has passed...:)

Let me try again now that the storm has passed and given us some very much needed rain and cooler temps....:D

Bas…The foil is to stop the “hot spot” from the flash, it is mounted on the top of that sheet of vellum and reflects back to the flash, although it could be mounted on the opposite side of the vellum, but I have not tried it that way and I don’t think that the foil would be as effective in producing the result that I was after if mounted on the opposite side of that vellum.

As for the slots in the vellum…when I was “tweaking” the diffuser I found that cutting the slots in the vellum allowed me to shoot with the flash at a lower power, which as we know means faster recycle time and longer battery life for the flash. The light coming through the slots is a “bounced” light, it tends to be softer and more pleasing.

So, the slots are to let more light through than the vellum allowed…and that light is also being reflected back into the top part of the diffuser by the piece of foil before exiting the slots in the vellum. So the foil is serving a dual purpose in that it stops the “hot spot” and bounces the light before it exits the vellum slots….This is my thinking behind this diffuser design and your mileage may vary….;)

Excellent,thanks DW.

I am looking forward to trying that. My MT24 seems to work well for me, and I would love to get a single flash that works as well on my second rig.

It is close now, but still is a little hot in the catch light.
