Whoa dude, I think you're reading a little too much into this. I don't get that Russ is bagging on you at all, just trying to give you a little nudge to get out and shoot a bit more. Yeah he's giving a youngster a bit of a hard time about finding a gf, but hey it's all in good fun. I do see you write pretty lengthy posts here quite a bit and I think that time could be spent out shooting. I know you might not have the time with school and stuff to go places, but maybe go out in the yard and shoot blades of grass, the texture of tree bark, bugs or whatever helps you learn your camera faster, just get out shooting. Do what I just did, ask for a challenge then shoot whatever the challenge is. You're from Florida, right? I'd like to see a palm tree, maybe with the sun behind it, so all you get is the silhouette. Ready, set GO!

I did the whole blades of grass thing years ago. I'm over it LOL. I know there's more I could do with it, but I have other ideas that I'm working on. I'm not focusing on the artistic side of it right now anyway. That's not what's going to pay the bills in the future. & trust me, if you saw the conversation in it's entirety, you would get where I'm coming from. I can take criticism & advice, and welcome it, but not where it isn't due. We don't know each other on a personal basis, so I'm not going to be welcome to personal advice especially in the manner it was delivered & the subject it was based upon.

Happy Anniversary of your Birth! Hope its a great day!

Thank you!

As most of you know I have moved on from the 60D to the 5D2 but I still follow both of the 60D threads daily. For those of you who don't follow me on Flickr here are a few recent shots from New Mexico. All were taken with the 5D2 and either the 135 or 16-35.

Just a little game for me. Someone give me a photo challenge for today. Something you'd like to see and if I see it out today I'll pull over and take a shot. Maybe just say a pic of a bird or maybe just take a candid of random people. Just something to get me looking for or shooting something I normally don't do.

Geez Russ you don't let up do you? I already have a kid trolling me with my posts pointing out things on campus. Trolling is the last thing I would expect out of you of all people. You leave me no choice but to defend myself when you bring it into this forum community.

The part of the conversation I posted was all that needed to be "public." I'm sure people could find it familiar how I'd rather have more dslr stuff over a point and shoot an what not.

The words of encourage by you spewed upon me last night in the rest of the conversation were very discouraging. Those words are neither here nor there and I don't appreciate you bringing them here. Therefore, again, I am forced to defend myself among my fellow 60d forum members.

-- no, I don't post many pictures. Yes, I just bought a crapload of photo gear. Does that make me a wannabe photographer? Absolutely freaking not!

Photography has many different aspects.. Two of them are the artistic and journalistic sides.

Well, I just so happen to be majoring in mass communications with a focus on media and journalism. It's the major I originally chose 5 majors ago. Clearly it's what I have a passion for above anything else.

Which brings me to another point. I am a college student. I don't have all the time in the world to devote to photography or editing/posting my work. Much to your dismay, Russ, I am not going to spend any time setting up a random iPhone snapshot to better my technique and display how good I am with a camera. I know how good I am an how much better I can be.

I could call you out on the crappy pictures on Facebook that other people post and you compliment them all being good pictures. They aren't any different than the pictures I can take with my phone if I spent even a minute setting them up.

So please, quit enforcing your lifestyle and photography guidelines on me while you're still ahead. I've got plenty of real world experience from the random years I pursued things other than education. I can take care of myself.

first off all you do is complain, then talk yourself up how awesome you are and how much better your photographs are then everyone else's and how you do have time to shoot but you dont need to because you are just that good!

if you can take my photos with the iphone& do it better i challenge you to get out there and do it! if you have critiques and think a picture i took sucks give me an honest critique (im a big boy and can handle and with lots of posts encourage it!)

im just so over your complaining and whining its so sickening. got something bad to say about my photos bring it! i dont know it all and have plenty to learn but im out there practicing my technique and working on my skill.

and in all honesty shame on you for bringing our conversation here with a false pretense to make you look better. get out there among real people and do real things and take photos to work on your skills and technique and skill so you improve whether you are using the 60d, iphone, or s100 the skills carry over sorry you found it offensive but im just over your crying and whining dude!

carry on!

Honestly Russ, his post did nothing to make him look better, just another rant. Stupid to be brought here if it had started somewhere else.
We all know what you bring to this community and for me that's all that matters.
I don't usually get involved in these kind of matters but enough is enough with childish whining and rants.

Andrew, I don't think you should take Russ's words so harshly. Yes, you are going the journalistic route, but there is still the matter of being able to think on your toes and get the right emotion in a shot, which only comes with practice. Sometimes you'll only have a split second to capture something and you need to be well-prepared for it.

I think what Russ meant was instead of spending time online buying things or talking about things you don't necessarily need [I'll be the first to admit I'm guilty of this as well], just get out there and practice with what you've got. It doesn't matter what type of photography you're into, or what type of anything you're into, practice practice practice. Don't go all Allen Iverson on us!

And hey, even though we aren't in school a lot of us work full-time, commute, have spouses, children, puppies, etc. but there is always time to shoot, edit, and post. I actually think I would have had more time to shoot had I taken up this hobby while I was in college. No excuses, especially if photojournalism is your major. ;)

Plus, I think we would all really like to see your photos and track your progress through the photojournalistic (is that a real word?) world. It's what we're all here for anyway. ;)

You're just displaying what I was talking about. I didn't bring the conversation here, you did. What I originally posted was to show how funny it is to just want more bodies. Nothin more, nothin less. You however decided to add what you dumped on me last night.

I never said I'm too good to take pictures , I've stated I stil obviously have lots to learn. I also stated in our conversation that I complained about the s100 because its slow compared to a dslr and seems like it was a poor investment. Big deal? No, but you turned it into one. Id be happy to critique your photos and I've complimented them before. You know the whole thing about not having anything nice to say? That's why I keep my mouth shut when some people ask for critiques. I'm not saying my opinion had more weight than anyone else's, but people take things on the Internet very critically, so I'd rather not say anything then possibly ruin someone's day or kill their love for photography.

you know what youre right sir and im sorry for putting it out there and i will just continue to contribute and grow and avoid this stuff in the future so for those that were offended at my diatribe i apologize and hope to move on and see some awesome photos! thanks for your input and bring some Gravitas to this situation! in all seriousness it is about photos and interacting with people of like mindedness and i let my distaste for some stuff digress and spill over into this forum! cheers sir for your well put words and here's to moving forward in the right direction to get back on topic for the off topic bs ot thread :)

well put and way more elegant then i could have ever said and you hit the nail on the head! i just didnt use the proper wording and let frustration speak and it got the better of me! thank you maria for helping me with the words i should have used instead of in the haste of the moment letting my words turn into something else!
