I'm still surprised that none of you guys are in on the new MySpace thing. If you haven't checked out the preview yet, got to
http://new.myspace.com
I guess I just figured that MySpace would just slowly fade away. Never had an account with them but it seemed like most every MySpace page I ever opened took forever to load and was an assault on the eyes. So I thought I'd better see if this new version was any more appealing.
So I clicked the link and, surprise! It says my current browser (IE8) is not supported. But they do provide links on the same page to download Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Already have Firefox so I opened that and was then able to view the new MySpace opening page. The background image is a full screen view of an LP spinning on a turntable, animated. And the animation is kind of choppy. Guess my DSL connection isn't up to snuff.
There's some text on the page explaining the planned changes but it's overlaid on the turntable image and really isn't as easy to read as it should be. And the first thing that comes to mind is, "This is the exact reason why lookng at most MySpace pages in the past gave me a headache."
I suppose the appeal of the place was the fact that you could decorate your page any way you wanted with seemigly no restraints. But all too often that also meant that no consideration was given to legibility and readable fonts. Or the eyestrain caused by a full page of tiled images, animated GIFs, and bright yellow backgrounds with orange text overlaid on it. My old eyebones could only take so much of that.
When it gets thru beta, and if you put together your own page, be sure to post a link for us. I'd be curious to see if it (and other folks pages) really are an improvement over the "old" MySpace.
