I'm going to ask a really broad question and I hope you guys will understand what I'm on about here and can point me to some resources.
Last night some buddies and I were watching a movie and one of them says "notice how they used blue and orange to add contrast." Well I started paying attention and it's every where! It's clearly a very common technique and now I'm not sure how it translates to still photography but it got me thinking. What other "tricks and techniques" are out there that are commonly used like that? I figure there's got to be hundreds of them. I'm sure that's why people go to film school or take photography lessons but it was so neat to be told that then see it in practically everything I've watched since.
So is there any other things like that you guys know about or know a resource I could read to learn things like that?
What you are likely seeing is called split toning. If you have light room there is entire set of controls dedicated to it. Basically you define a range in the image that are "shadows" and can give them a specific tint, and then another range of the image that are the "highlights" and give them a different tint. The most common is to cool down the shadows and make them bluer, while warming up the highlights.
I guess if you can find a good editing guide with lightroom or a general one on digital post processing you might find it useful, there is also a forum here dedicated to post I think.
