I'm going to ask a really broad question and I hope you guys will understand what I'm on about here and can point me to some resources.

Last night some buddies and I were watching a movie and one of them says "notice how they used blue and orange to add contrast." Well I started paying attention and it's every where! It's clearly a very common technique and now I'm not sure how it translates to still photography but it got me thinking. What other "tricks and techniques" are out there that are commonly used like that? I figure there's got to be hundreds of them. I'm sure that's why people go to film school or take photography lessons but it was so neat to be told that then see it in practically everything I've watched since.

So is there any other things like that you guys know about or know a resource I could read to learn things like that?

What you are likely seeing is called split toning. If you have light room there is entire set of controls dedicated to it. Basically you define a range in the image that are "shadows" and can give them a specific tint, and then another range of the image that are the "highlights" and give them a different tint. The most common is to cool down the shadows and make them bluer, while warming up the highlights.

I guess if you can find a good editing guide with lightroom or a general one on digital post processing you might find it useful, there is also a forum here dedicated to post I think.

Argh, my PC was running fine yesterday when I went to turn it on...then about 4 hours later I noticed it was off...tried to power it up..Power Supply gets warm and a nice Ozone smell is coming out. So annoying. Hopefully it didn't get into the rest of the PC.

[QUOTE=Immaculens;15596702]... its actually 'both', as in an LED LCD Monitor... http://www.newegg.ca …aspx?Item=N82E16824236176 (external link)

I have a similar LED LCD monitor (mine's an HP). I'm not real happy with image quality either, not very sharp. It was a holiday blowout special, guess I shouldn't expect too much.

Picked up my 100-400 and 2X TC yesterday. Can't wait to use them!! Anyone know if the 2x TC works well with the 70-200 2.8? I know it's manual focus with the 100-400.

It will drop you to a 5.6, which will still focus. Is it a revision III on the TC? The IQ from that is pretty good, although it dulls that magical sharpness quality of the 70-200 somewhat.

Yes it works with the 70-200. Here's a thread I started a while ago. Got a chance to use the 2X with the 100-400 the other day and not really impressed with it. I ran into a few photogs while out shooting that let me try it with the 2X and didn't really like the results. However, I did only have it on for only about ten min. each time and it could do better if I maybe had more time to set up and shoot in preferred conditions. Funny, the guy that I ran into that had the 100-400 and 2X was using it together and not really getting any good shots, then we switched lenses for a few minutes and I wanted my lens back quick since it was too long and had no IS. Went out to the same place this weekend and saw the same guy, he went and got a 70-200.

All great shots in that thread, thanks. I'm going to play with the different combos and see what I like best. I could always sell both lenses and end up with the newer 70-200 II if it doesn't work out.

What you are likely seeing is called split toning.

I understood the question to be more about basic color theory than anything technical.
Here's a quick video intro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4163nHq_KkI (external link)

As for other "tips and tricks" I would suggest looking more into the principals and traditional techniques of all visual arts and how they can be applied to photography. You can find a lot of stuff online.
B and H has some good lectures like this one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtcD84l9eUw (external link)
(there was a great one I saw a while ago showing techniques carried over from painting to photography but I can't find it now :()

hope this helps.

This thread moves so quick! Now that work has slowed down a bit I should be able to keep up :)

Vix, so sorry to hear about your troubles lately!! But I'm glad you're feeling better and hopefully this just means you and your family will have the best of luck from here on out. Hope you had a great/are having a great Chinese New Year celebration!

The 6D/5D Mark III talks are making me sad, because I reallyyyy want to get a 5D Mark III, but it won't be any time soon because I need to figure out my funds for my trip to Europe, and I'm probably going to need to build a PC soon (RAW files eat up hard drive space fast, eh?). Temporarily I'll probably just switch out my hard drive in my laptop though.

Btw, I'm year of the tiger :)

If you have a home network, you can also look into a NAS to offload/store files.... or just a usb hard drive.
