vinz, i had the 60 2.8 and 50 1.4 at the same time at some point and i feel like the 50 is way better when it comes to portraits. i rarely shoot at 1.4 but anywhere from 1.8 to 2.8 is pretty damn sharp. i sold the 60 for the same reason, i couldnt get my self to like macro photography and just used the money towards my flash. i think you should really consider it. even on the 60d the 50mm is a great lens.

you think i should just live with my 60mm F2.8?

If i were you, i would keep the 60mm 2.8, its lovely for portraits and can do macro work aswell, i have the 100L macro, and its beautiful for portraits. The 60mm is supposedly as sharp at 2.8 as that one, the 50mm 1.4 isnt sharp at 1.4, its gets sharp at 2.8. The 85mm 1.8 could also be considered.

Vinz, what I am saying is that the 60 is probably good enough for portraiture at f2.8. You don't even need the f2.0 or f1.4.

Since you have the bug, I'd suggest to slowly invest buying the Holy Trinity (35L, 85L, 135L) and then you can move to the 5D3 or 5D4 depending on how long it takes... You can buy the 50L as well before that...

Edit: From the other thread. The problems you had with your pool photo shoot were not in portraits but in full scene shots where the fence showed. For this kind of photo, indeed a f1.4 would be of help. A f1.2L even more so...:p

the problem with the photoshoot i did was the space + it's a group shot. I can't use F1.4 either otherwise some folks will be outcast.

but i think you're right on my 60mm. i'm afraid some more vultures get it. :D

Yes, it's the sensor. I tested the lenses & then realized the spots didn't move. I was doing tests at f22 & then I realized I could go 32 so they're darker than what I had been trying to clean off, but I'm not going any further with the wrong tools at this point LOL. Throughout my process it would get better or worse & this is the best I could get it.

But, I'm fine with it like that if that's an okay amount of dust ;)

I "might" attempt a mirror cleaning but I would not attempt even touching my sensor because its such a sensitive technology, despite there being tools and kits available. When the time comes I'll send mine away for a pro sensor & mirror cleaning, Canon if need be.

For myself I try not to grimace every time I take a lens off & attach another. Ever have sunbeams coming through a window and then someone walks by? Usually a whole-lotta fine dust is easily kicked up in the air. We only see it in that certain light - but its still there, always. I think for many its a "If I don't see dust in the air - no problem" thing.

I change my lenses on my kitchen counter where I prepare meals because a) its the cleanest dust-free area in my home, and; b) its higher than a coffee table (etc) and the heavier dust settles on lower surfaces.

Just my 1.7 cents worth...

hmmmm i think with you as having both.... am gonna listen more.

another thing is. if the 50mm is most sharp at 2.8, do you think it's better to just use my sigma 17-50 F2.8 zoom all the way (plus it has IS)

at least i have an extra 10mm with my 60mm in case i needed more reach. + plus the macro capability?

excellent point & great maintenance without touching the sensor.
I was strictly referring to touching the sensor with anything would be a sure no-no for me

Addendum: nor would I use compressed air because as I understand it - there are often fine oily gasses in them and getting that on your sensor is....
I've seen white substances come out of cans too which cannot be a good thing 'in' your dslr...

my copy of the 50 1.4 is sharp from 1.8 all the way up. but then again all lenses could be different. i just dont understand why people talk so much **** about it. dont get me wrong the 60mm is a great lens too but i know the 50mm blows it away when it comes to portraits, i really wish i would of kept the 60mm to shoot more legos

ill show you how sharp the 50 1.4 really is

at 1.4 (taken with my old XS)

I posted a question about sensor cleaning just a few minutes ago on the "main" 60D site. I figure, if someone else can clean it, with the proper equipment, so can I.... but I may live to regret my over-confidence. ;)
