Opinions on how this combo would work. Looking to use it for birding. Looking for reach and this should do it. Wide open at 400 would the sharpness be up to par? Thought about the Sigma 150-500 but keep reading it is soft. That's the last thing I need.

Look through the gallery in my sig. That's the setup I use; you can see if it's up to par or not :) Personally, I love the combo.

Only birds I shoot are metallic. So my opinion wouldn't qualify.

Will these suffice. 7D+100-400L the Exif data should be intact.

I'm not a huge birder, but here are a couple shot wide open with the 7D + 100-400L combo:

7D + 100-400L is a classic birding combo.

I am happy with my 100-400L at 400mm & f/5.6. I use it on a 60D, though. Be aware, this lens is heavy, and hand-holding 400mm takes a bit of getting used to. My first outing was an eye opener!
Edit: these are 100% crops.

I tried the Sigma 150-500 before swtiching to the Canon 100-400. Now that is a big beast to lug around. Though IQ was close.

As a fit late 20's male I can hand-hold the 100-400 for a good amount of time and it works fine with a neck strap. The 150-500 I needed to shoulder strap due mostly to its sheer size. I'll be swapping to the 7d or similar eventually. The 100-400 on any body will do some magical things.

Here is what wide open at 400mm can get you

Talked to a guy at Canon and he recommends center point and AF point expansion as a starter. What you all think about this? Is there a better way to go?

Depends on what you're shooting and how much of the subject occupies the VF. Single point, or single point + expansion are good starting points. Doesn't have to be centered however unless you prefer to crop later for composition.

Center point works quite well; Expansion AF I'd use for the moving targets, but single point, and spot focus for the suckers hiding in trees, work just fine for the stationary ones.

You'll definitely want to get comfortable with AI SERVO focus, and using the AF-ON or * button to activate your AF (AKA "Back Button Focus").

Love the 100-400 L IS on my 7D. Wide open, it really does get that shot while birding.
