I told my old dear about my holy red ring and she just said "is there no cream for it?"

I don't know what good composition is.... Sometimes for me composition has to do with a certain brightness or a certain coming to restness and other times it has to do with funny mistakes. I don't really get this 'holy trinity' thing. As far as I can tell it's just a sub set of 'L Fever', 'Dante Virus' and other such in-group/out-group nonesense. Maybe I'm missing something.

Yes you are missing the best, sharpest, color and contrat resolving lenses aver made!

Before people start jumping up and down, yes I know that MTF ratings aren't everything, but its as close to impartial as you are going to get

Penta-thingy-ology - - - - - - - Photodo ranking (out of 5)
aka The Elements

35mm 1.4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4.0
50mm 1.0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 3.9
85mm 1.2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4.6
135mm 2.0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4.5
200mm 1.8 - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4.8 (highest rated lens ever)

And just as a FYI
35mm 2.0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 3.9
50mm 1.4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4.4
50mm 1.8 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4.2 (now that's good bang for buck)
85mm 1.8 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4.1
200mm 2.8 - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4.0

So even if you are looking for a less pocket heavy solution there are some excellent options. Which is why I have the 50 1.4 not the 50 1.0, and has nothing to do with the fact that you cant find one for love nor money.

all the best

   wow, thanks, I've gotta have them all and now! Quick, where's the brown truck. Are they front, back, side or centre focusing? Is my image soft or am I just flaky around the edges? Does my bum look big in this? Hey, I got da L Fever ...

Just kidding ;) Enjoy them fella's.

Perhaps we need a snappy title for the, 'Kit lens, and one other second-hand, obsolete lens that doesn't even focus, and anyway I can't take a picture to save my life - trinity' (and there arn't even three!).

Perhaps the holy shmoly or something.

Anyway, very well done for collecting the set.

Well I suppose those without the ultimate lenses can console ourselves with the thought that we still have some excuses when our pictures fall a short of perfection :)

BTW - isn't the 300 f2.8L considered the sharpest, best colour and contrast lens in canon's current line-up (the holy of holies? :)) although, admittedly, also more expensive than the ones mentioned here?

Nice try WavyC, lol, if your technique is poor then you wont see the benefit of L's anyway. With good technique there is a benefit, without it... you should have spent the money on a holiday...

Improving your technique usually improves your photographs far more than buying an L.

WRT the 300 2.8L, can't comment have never used it.

So are these sets like Monopoly where if you get a complete set you can build hotels on them or something? In that case I should go get a 24-105 so I'll have the f/4 L holy zoomer trinity lite.

Oh wait, it costs a little more than the $300 currently sitting in my lens fund. Guess I'll have to wait.

I think so too ;)

As someone else already pointed out though, I guess we will always want the best we can get our hands on, lol.

Thanks for posting those tables. It's interesting to see so little difference between the 35mm f2 and f1.4L versions (given the large price difference). Makes me wonder a little since I love this focal length on a 1.6 crop camera and am thinking of getting the L version myself.

It doesn't matter - Belmondo owns the railroads and about 1/2 the board. :)

The tables are good evidence, but they shouldn't be taken as the lone source of information. They only tested 1 copy of each lens, so if they got a bad one, it's going to show up on the tables.
