Of Course I do understand that the best option is to be running in RAW, BUT for those moments that you don't, any tips on how to optimise the settings in the pocture styles for JPEG?

Hej,

My $0.02 on the topic.

As we know the DSLR always makes a raw file and then uses the raw file to generate a thumbnail for the LCD panel. The thumbnail jpg is generated using the currently selected picture style. It is that thumbnail jpg that is used to generate the RGB histogram. If you told the camera to save the image as jpg, the picture style would also be used to generate the large saved jpg file.

I always have the picture style set to neutral. I want the RBG histogram to as accurately as possible portray what I will later find in the raw file. I shoot raw only. But if I did turn on both raw and jpg (never jpg only) I would still keep the picture style as neutral. To me it is more important to have a great negative (the raw file) than an enhanced jpg...because I can create enhanced jpgs later on a computer.

I can understand that press photographers must do jpgs as they need to get their shots submitted to the wire services, newspapers and magazines ASAP. For them a enhanced jpg may be exactly what they want and have learned exactly which enhancements in the picture styles makes their jpgs more acceptable/saleable. I think we need one of those persons to spill the beans on which enhancements tend to work best to create great news and sports photos.

MVH, Michael
