Just received my approved credentials for 2012 Mayhem Fest in Atlanta.
This will be my first major event.
I will be allowed to photograph the first three songs of the following bands...
Anthrax
Motorhead
Slayer
Slipknot

I'm very confident that I will be able to produce great shots.
My only concern is protecting my gear.
Any advice on protecting my gear while in the photo pit would be appreciated?

Thanx for your help!

Insurance. Most pits are metal barriers with a step for security to control crowds, under that step is a space where you can put your gear. Remeber where you have left it. All good photographers (amateur or pros) wouldn't have the need to touch or nick your gear. Saying that, I haven't been unfortunate enough to have my gear nicked, but complacency is a killer. Just don't forget it after the 3 songs

Those without pits, unfortunately you will have to carry around with you, heavy or not

Don't worry about it buddy, you'll be alright!
Just make sure you put your gear in the case/bag when you're not using it.

IDK about Atlanta, but Mayhem tends to approve a ton of photographers and jam them in to the pits.

The bands you are shooting are main stage bands IIRC. Just stick your bag under a step on the barrier and you will be fine. The worst thing that has happened to me is someone spilled a beer on my bag. Once.

Keep an eye out when Anthrax plays "Caught in a Mosh". Scott Ian tends to get air during the chorus. Makes for a good jump shot.

the biggest thing you have to worry about is what kind of rights-grabbing release there may be!
