Kenosha Velodrome - night time

My second time trackside this year. Still getting the hang of shooting velodrome racing, but getting more comfortable each time. Brought my new flash this time which makes life SO much easier. Racing started about sunset, finished about 10pm. All shot with my $99 'thrifty fifty', 50mm f1.8. Never even needed to get down to f1.8.

To be honest I don't like these that much except for 3. The reason I like 3 the most is because of the spoke blur.

Any reason you went with flash versus panning?

was your flash on camera?
They have a very artificial flashed look to them

I like No 5, and I had a look at the others of that race, I like the result and they stand out well with the black background.

Yes, I used flash because it was dark.

This was about 9:30pm on a poorly lit track.

No flash = VERY slow shutter speed panning.

I'm of the feeling that you don't NEED to have spoke blur on every single shot you take.

you can sync at 640?

I have a 40D
is there anyway to sync mine faster?
im stuck on 1/250

Sure. I have a 580EXII flash and use the high speed sync feature. I'm also forcing myself to get out of AV mode and shoot manual when using the flash. Manual mode is impossible on this track with out the flash because of lighting hot and dark spots, but the flash cures that ugly problem.
