5D3 and Antwerp - Yet another "which lens" question

I recently upgraded to a 5d3 -after selling my 1D3, 70-200 f/2.8 and 300 f/4. I am in the process of changing modes - concentrating more on wildlife and landscapes and less on sports.

I'm traveling to Antwerp soon and would like to take my 5d3 but I don't have a good walk-around lens. I am also planning a few road trips this summer. I am good on the long end but need some shorter lenses.

I have never taken time on my business trips to walk around with my camera so I don't have any experience with lens selection for that purpose. Any good suggestions?

Thanks!

I like standard zooms for walk around lens. So I'd recommend a 24-70 or 24-105, depending on how you feel about weight and size.

If you want a prime and want something/light, consider the 40mm/2.8 pancake or your favorite 35mm, 50mm, and/or 85mm.

It depends on what you are planning to shoot on your walks. Both 17-40L and 24-105L are great options, it just depends on which end you prioritize.

Thanks for the response.

Is there a significant difference in image quality between these two lenses?

I have a strong suspicion that I will not miss the bottom 7mm but that I will miss the long end. However, my feet can make up for most of the focal length difference most of the time but they can't do much about IQ.

On my 5D2 my most used lens would be the 24-105. I brought it primarily for its great range as a walkaround when travelling. I often go out with only that lens when we are sightseeing and it fits the bill perfectly.

Thanks - I guess I should have bought the package ;)

I was just on the phone with a friend who also has the 5D2+24-105 and he says it is the lens to get.

Can't go wrong with the 24-70 or the 24-105 as a walk around lens.

24 is fairly wide for a FF body :)

Not always. More often when in Europe you can come closer, but walking back may not be an option - the streets are narrow, the spaces are small, while the buildings (e.g., cathedrals) can be large. A 24-105 (or a 17-70 on a crop) would be the optimal range there. At least that is what I take when traveling to Europe. I usually take a UWA with me too, but use it only about 20 percent of the time.

Sorry, I do not know what other walks you plan to do.

Take a wideangle!

Antwerp does have a nice trainstation where you NEED a wideangle.

Great info - Thanks everyone. I'm getting ready to hit "checkout" on a 24-105.

The 7mm from 17 to 24 is different than the 7mm at higher focal lengths. If you want to capture the grandness of a place, the 17-40L is better equipped to do so. But if you're looking for a one-lens-fits-all, a 24-XXmm should do.

On recent excursions, I have brought my crop body with the 10-22 and 60 macro. Great combo IMO. There's always something small no matter where you go that needs a macro lens.

A 24-105, like others have said, is great all-rounder. A 50 is a great walk-around as well as it is fast and ready for low-light, great DOF control, great image quality for the money, and just a fun lens to use.

I have a 50 f/1.4 and an 85 f/1.8 - both nice lenses and both work well but I like the versatility of a zoom.

A 24-105 would be great complement to those then...
