Thanks for the thoughts guys, and Simon, it's nice to know I may not be alone with having multiple lenses with the same fault.

I'm really hanging out for the test results from the supplier on the 2nd lens I returned as that would eliminate any question of my testing techniques or the camera body if they can recreate the fault. In the meantime I am going to try and shoot some more stuff (probably on Saturday) with the new lens and see how it stacks up.

Nothing wrong with expecting a L lens to not be decentered. Decentered lenses may be common with low cost 3rd party brands, but if L is quality, nothing wrong with expecting it, and testing for it.

After trying a couple 17-40's both softer on one side that the other, I tried a 16-35 and it was perfect.

yeah I have this lens, but never had a big problem with it. reading this post I will sureley notice it this time or keep an eye open...
