Iridescent Fly

Need help with ID'ing this one. He was super skittish and super fast. A couple of times he would take off after the flash went off and before my shutter actuated. I was really impressed. I watched it happen twice. I wish I had captured him sharper but this was the best I could do with how jumpy he was. I was lucky to have overcast skies so I could sneak up on him.

Lovely captures- a dolichopid fly. They are often startled by the flash. If you are using ettl then they startle with the preflash and you generally get a photo of their legs when the main flash goes off. You can use the flash in manual to avoid this (the fly does not then have enough time to react).

Wow - thanks for the information. This explains the jitteriness. Next time I see one I will adjust my tactics.

Ditto what Brian said...I have a pile of photos of these Long legged flies in mid air or just their legs, all blurry of course. Very quick little buggers.
