Please post pictures, if you can.

For starters, I would reformat the memory card.

Ok, I see you removed the lens cap. Got another card you can try? Try a reset, pull all the batteries (including the one that stores settings/date) and wait a few minutes before putting them back. Bad ones do leave the factory, but it's rare.

by chance have you tried viewing the pictures on a computer? I would try changing to shoot in RAW/Jpg and see if for any reason that gives you a different result. Perhaps try a different memory card or shoot tethered to a computer and see what comes out

Try hitting the info button. Sometimes, it's set up so that the info button scrolls through a series of screens, and one of them if a black/grey screen.

Grey with a little pink on top? Hmm. That sounds like a hardware issue. Maybe a completely dead sensor? Or a dead screen. That would be insanely rare but its possible.

I'd certainly look into doing a few more tests to be sure, but I wouldn't struggle too hard to get it functional. If it's faulty now it's likely to stay that way and a trip back to the vendor looks likeliest. The batteries normally are part charged in the box, so if it's a local vendor I'd ask to check it while you're still in the shop.

That gives you a solid black screen.

The AF is turned on correct? I'm assuming this isn't your first DSLR, or is it?

Hi well you would be right in that assumption, but I'm learning.

Cheers for advice.

Try another memory card, but first I would try looking at the images on PC.

Ok an update, tried again after work last night, and I think it's US for sure. Took a picture of the kettle in kitchen, it was very dark even with ISO up to high, then when taking other pictures a 'ghosting' effect was visible, even though the now mostly pink screen. I will send it back Monday to HDEW cameras in London. They have asked only for the body, I.e no batt, memory card, etc etc.

Some advice... If they don't just replace it, and send ur to canon for repair what kind of turn around is likely, I'm just starting out, but looks like a full sensor malfunction to me? Should I be asking for a full replacement due to the camera bring faulty out of box??? And should canon be liable for my postage costs, it might be 20 quid or so with insurance etc?

Cheers

Insist that they replace it with a good working one or give you a full refund - It is obviously unfit for purpose (it doesn't take pictures!) straight out of the box.
