Even if you think there is a break in the action, don't pause to review images, something interesting and photo-worthy is bound to happen!

I missed a disc to the face that resulted in stitches photographing an game of ultimate Frisbee the other day because I Sneezed. I think the best thing to do is go hide your head under a rock and never shoot sports again.

Depends on what sport you're shooting.

I'm guilty your honor. Guilty as hell.

I've missed so many shots for so many bad reasons (including chimping) that I'm thankful I'm old and forget just how many I've missed! ;):D;)

Noob tip #2- Never worry about a missed photo. If you do it will just throw you off and cause you to miss the next one.

Chimping isn't all that bad. I do it to lock photos in camera so that I know which ones to send to the wire/paper. It's much quicker to import say 20 files than 500.

...and if you don't chimp, how would you know that your sensor died? :o
(I caught it after about 75 shots)

I was shooting with a guy on my weekend job (shooting running races), and it took him about 450 shots to realize his shutter failed, had about that many shots with a huge black line in them. I didn't care, he had a Nikon... :)

Additionally...

Learn and KNOW the sport you are shooting. If you know the sport you can anricipate where and when the action will occur. This is especially true in field team sports...

This. Me and a friend of mine stumbled upon a rugby tournament the other day and that was somewhat difficult seeing as how neither of us had ever seen/played rugby before. Although once you watch it for a bit you realize it's pretty similar to a football/soccer hybrid and it becomes a little easier to get the hang of.
