I'm somewhat new to HDR and I have a few questions. I'm trying to break out of the 3 image limitation on the Canon 7D I have. So what I planned on doing (and I'm sure others have thought of this before) is to use C1, C2, and C3 to allow me preset everything as shown below to do up to 9 images in rapid succession using a tripod. Here's the plan...

M = Canon 10 - 22mm @ f/22 - ISO100 - Bracket +/- 2/3
C1 = Canon 10 - 22mm @ f/22 - ISO100 - Bracket +/- 1 1/3
C2 = Canon 10 - 22mm @ f/22 - ISO100 - Bracket +/- 2
C3 = Canon 10 - 22mm @ f/22 - ISO100 - Bracket +/- 2 2/3

So I start on "M" mode and with camera set to high speed burst shoot 3 pictures +/- 2/3, then click the mode dial to "C1" and adjust the shutter speed to meter on center and burst shoot 3 pictures +/- 1 1/3, then click the mode dial to "C2" and adjust the shutter speed to meter on center and burst shoot 3 pictures +/- 2, then click the mode dial to "C3" and adjust the shutter speed to meter on center and burst shoot 2 2/3 final pictures +/- 3. I've timed this and I can do all of the shots in ~6 - 7 seconds so I shouldn't have too much ghosting due to movement. Things like waves, boats, flags, birds, etc. may be an issue but for distant stationary landscape shots I can probaly control most of that.

This should result in 9 images one each at -2 2/3, -2, -1 1/3, -2/3, 0, +2/3, +1 1/3, +2, +2 2/3 (actually I'll have 4 at +0 but I'll only use one of those). Since the only thing that will change picture to picture is exposure comp and shutter speed it should work. Correct?

I also plan to shoot sunsets at Carmel's "Lone Cypress" with this method so a couple other variables to consider are I'll have a CPL filter + Cokin P-Series graduated 0.9 ND. I may also add a graduated blue filter on the bottom to enhance the ocean and a graduated sunset filter on top to enhance red/yellow/orange. Will that have any effect on my bracketing range choices?

Any other tips, thoughts, suggestions, ideas, encouragement, would be greatly appreciated.

.

im more interested in why youre shooting at f22 instead of say f16 on an ultrawide? whether your subject is 10ft away or 1000ft away, youre not gaining much in DOF (only 3-4inches at 10mm). Instead youre probably softening the image and slowing down the shutterspeed.

anyways, ive done 9 shot HDRs, using the custom settings shouldnt be a problem. you can also just stay in M mode and just roll your shutterspeed or EC in AV without the need to switch to your custom modes. the only thing i can think of is that you might shake the camera or turn your camera slightly left or right when you twist the mode dial. since youre capturing all these images in quick succession, the slower shutter speed from using f22 might cause slightly blurred images. Ive done HDR with filters such as a CPL. they really make things like clouds pop even more than usual.

if you want more range, you an go: -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3, +4.
how i do it:
1. AEB set at +2/-2
2. find the 0 EV.
3. set shutter speed to -2ev, take first 3 shots.
4. set shutter speed to -1ev, take second 3 shots
5. set shutter speed to +1ev, take third 3 shots
6. set shutter speed to +2ev, take last 3 shots.

Thanks for the tip. That's way eisier than my way... geez... I should have just asked how everyone else does it... :) I feel like a dork... <:^)

I'm going to set it to f/16. I want everythnig in the foreground and background in focus but I did realize that at short focal lenths the DOF difference was so small. I'm still learning.

Well I'm off to Big Sur and Carmel for a day of shooting. Going to try and make it all the way to McWay Falls (external link).
