Newbie question so please be patient.
I've had an EOS350D since 2007 my first (aside form a Praktica compact) foray into digital. I've been really happy with the camera, but would now like to start with a Full frame camera ( having previously had - still have and AE1 35mm camera )

I am in the usual position that most folk are now in (recession, doom, gloom etc) I have no money, (I'm not advocating a life of crime) I have wanted to upgrade to an EOS5D MKII for some time, but £2500 approx (inc lens) is a jump too far in one go, I will NOT borrow from anyone, not even the nice bank, I prefer to save, call me old fashioned, but I am.

Will this work, are there caveats?

I had thought, keep the EOS350D (no choice really) buy a Canon 24 - 105 mm F4 lens to use on the 350, then save borrow etc, for the 5D body using the 350d with the newer EF lens until I have the dosh, the kids won't mind going hungry for a while...

Yes I know that Canon have now brought out a shiny new MKIII, but with a body only price of £3k it's unobtanium as far as I'm concerned.

Has anyone used a 24 105 F4 on an EOS350D?

I know there will be the usual crop problems but as long as it will work ok I am happy to 'get by' for now. It also has very good reviews as a gen purpose lens.
Thanks in adv. R.

Personally I think 350D with 24-105 is a fine combination as long as you an live with 24mm wide. 24-105 image quality is very similar to the 17-55/2.8 IS.

A friend of mine did that with his first DSLR (400D). As you are planning to do, he focused on investing in lens that were compatible with full frame bodies. That worked for him, because he rarely ever shot below 24mm with his 400D.

FWIW, when my friend pulled the trigger on a full frame DSLR (5D3), he had: 400D, 7D, 18-55 IS kit (I think he took four pictures with it), 24-105, 100 macro (non-L), 100L macro, 400/5.6L, 35L, 50/1.4, and 70-300 DO IS. Going with 5D3 body, he also recently bought a 24 TS-E II.

At the time I went full frame, I had a 350D, 40D, 18-55 IS kit, 17-85 IS, 17-55 IS, 10-22, 50/1.8, and 70-200/4L IS. I loaned out the 18-55 and 17-85. That still left me with the 17-55 and 10-22 not being used along with my 40D.

Since I got over five years of use with my 10-22 and 17-55, I don't regret investing so much into EF-s lens. The 10-22, 17-55, and 70-200 combination really served me well. But, from a cost perspective, that was $1700 worth of glass investment (I bought them a long time ago; would be a lot more bought new today). I could probably sell the lens for as $1200 or so because they are still in demand.

The lens will work on the 350D...The only thing that you might find bothersome is that it's not wide enough at the short end for things like scenic landscapes etc. with the crop body.(Though will be better on the 5Dm2)

Should be great for general photographic needs as well as portraiture.

Anything, as long as you don't need a wide angle of view.

Sorry all,

First post nerves. Should have added.

The lens I got with the 350d is a Canon 18 55mm F3.5 5.6 It's not a bad all round lens. Could not afford anything else at the time, or since.

I shoot lots of different things. Landscape, Plants/Flowers Animals/Wildlife, not so much people, as the usual privacy / PC rules are more pervasive than they used to be (certainly in this country) and wifey does not like her pic taken so that does not leave many people.

I recognise the 18 - 55 has quite a few limitations but the 350d was the first 'real' digital, it is now long in the tooth, and having done some research I've learned a bit more about what I'd like.

Going on the reponses so far I wil probably get the 24 105 and I can always use the 18 55 for wider shots. Obviously it will not fit the 5D (should I afford one)

Thanks for all replies. R.

Take a look at the focal lengths you've been shooting in the past. See how many of them were shot less than 24mm. Also see how close wide angle shots are to other shots taken at the long end. That'll give you some idea of how much you'll be impacted by going 24-105 and having to swap to get wider than 24mm.

Lastly, if you really don't have a lot invested in glass, you could also consider mirrorless systems for your needs. A major problem for me was once I got the glass I wanted, I was looking at big and heavy camera bags. I'm now thinking micro four thirds for travel.

Updated question (thanks to all for the suggestions so far)

I've had a rethink on getting the 24 - 105 mm. I mentioned I had an old EOS 5D (35mm film camera which came as a kit with a sigma 28 - 80mm F3.5 5.6 lens) Can anyone tell me would this lens fit an EOS5D MKII?

Reason being, I could buy an EOS 5D MKII first, instead of the lens, I know the sigma lens is not really a good start (in comparison to the Canon 24 - 105) but I'd rather get to grips with understanding the new camera.
Thanks McP
