Jun 16, 2012 16:07 | #1 I am trying to make a outdoor portraits rig to be used without an assistant (monopod or light weight light stand to be used with triggered speedlights) and was looking around for a 15-16 inch umbrella - the smallest that I have found thus far is about 20 inches available at adorama - is anyone aware of a smaller umbrella?

I have one with me in my bag all the time. A slightly bigger alternative is the 16"x16" Lastolite or Cheetah Qbox. Both are significantly smaller. Hugh

A 24 inch softbox or large umbrella is no less portable or problematic than a small one. Maybe in certain winds a smaller one might be only slightly less wind prone, but really not enough that I would compromise the quality of light.

ernestcuellar Mostly Lurking 10 posts Joined Jun 2012 More info | If you have the lens zoomed out and it is a variable aperture lens, be sure the lens does not close down on your aperture. In other words, if you determine that your correct exposure is 1/125 at f3.5 and you zoom out your lens and it closes the aperture down to 6.5, then of course, your photo will be underexposed. You will have to set your lighting so it will expose correctly at the smallest aperture your lens closes down to. This is why variable aperture zoom lenses are not good for portrait work. You need a prime lens or a zoom lens with a constant aperture.
