Hi there.... I hope someone can help me... I hope my camera is not broken. I was trying to shoot my girls for Christmas today and my 50 1.8 would not auto focus... I thought maybe it was the lens motor not working.... but then I put my Tamron on and the same thing happens.

I do have the lens switched to AF.... I can manual focus and take pictures. I have a photoshoot later today and it's going to be no fun if I have to manual focus everything.....

Is it a camera problem, or maybe there is a setting I can check?? I removed and replaced the battery, but no change.

I would have ventured this guess too given that both your lenses do not work... If not, you might have to live with MF till the holidays are over :(

Cheers!

Okay that makes sense since I just discovered that the AF works in the full manual modes. Now Keep in mind that I am still learning to use the camera and do not know for sure what all these things mean.

What setting should I set cf4 at to be make the af work?

Okay.... WOO HOO!! I'm all clear! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! I changed the cf4 setting to zero and waaa-lah-ah Focus happens! I was so afraid there was something wrong with my camera.... I wonder how it got changed in the first place.

Now that this is done, can either of you direct me towards a manual that will be more helpful than the less-than-helpful one that came with my camera?

Thanks again.....I could just kiss both of you!

if you know you haven't set any Custom Functions, you should have a menu choice that allows you to reset them all. That will undo any CF that may have been inadvertently set.

Good luck. I don't think you have broken camera.

Okie dokie!! Thanks again.... As I am learning the only cf I have set is the fill flash in a/v mode to 250.... I'm not sure what exactly that means, but it is supposed to decrease the amount of flash, I think.

That happened to my 50 1.8, but I just took the lens off and put it back on. It still happens sometimes.

Yeah, I was reading that it happens to the 50 1.8 which is what I was using at the time, that's why I put my Tamron on. I was glad to know it was just the custom function problem.

That won't affect the flash at all. But it will keep the Av shutter speed at 1/250 sec. when you use the flash. The default setting lets the shutter speed vary so the background gets a proper exposure, but that can be too slow for hand-holdability.
