Also a MkIIN and 17-40 fan. I tested the 16-35mm and the 17-40 against each other before I bought my 17-40L (I have a very accomodating local photo store), and I definitely preferred the 17-40L as I found it had better resistance to flare. For my style and use of wide angles, it was a better value as well (I seldom use wide angles in low light conditions, and if I did, I would use a tripd).

Also 16-35L is out of mind

I've been very happy with mine, it's the lens I bought when I got my 1D2N and it did wonderfully a few days later in Sedona, AZ. For me it will pull double duty as a fast small-room indoor lens, otherwise I don't think you can go wrong with the 17-40/4 L if that is more in your price range.

Given that you already have the 28-135 IS, maybe a fast wide-angle prime would be a better option? I just replaced mine with the 24-105/4 L and have to admit the 16-35 seems more a luxury than a necessity; I doubt the 17-40/4 would be much different. But a great prime would be less expensive, faster, better optically, or some combination of all three.

Stay safe!
