I have never tried capturing cars, let alone panning with them (aircraft tend to be my bag) but I got my wife a day at a rally driving school where she had a blast in two rally cars and, of course, I took the cameras. Here are some of the images I got (some the wife, some not).

As spectators were very limited where we could stand, and being that where we were allowed was right on a slow turn, I had to drop the shutter speeds something crazy to get a reasonable sense of speed in the pans (down to as low as 1/40th in fact!) so I worked with this as best I could.

Main thing is that the wife had great fun and loved every second of it and I'm not too unhappy with what I walked away with either, considering.

Hope you like, feedback most welcome as always.

Lol, I saw it more as a challenge to get it working in camera. Tis was especially so when the wife was driving....(did I just say that?).

EDIT: must say, not trying to take the Mickey out of my wife, as I know she loved it, and I loved trying to get a sense of motion from scene with her doing 15mph in an unlimited zone.

Ah, man, done it again...No favors for me tonight. Mmmm.

All good shots there Andrew. I'd have been torn between wanting to drive and wanting to photograph :)

great shots if a little too cropped or zoomed in

its not how you take the picture, its the final result before editing.

Nice work !
They may be cropped a little tight, but there is some awesom pics there, I really like 2,3 and the last one.
I don't think I have seen a rally stage smooth enough to shoot shutter speeds that low

I have wanted to do a rally day for a long time, Looks like a lot of fun, and I would hopefully learn something too

Sorry for the late reply, missed the mails saying responses had come in as subbed to many, many threads...

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. Totally agree that some are way, way too tight. Must remember "give subjects more space to breathe" in future.

I did drive home - quite a way, 96 odd km - in a non rally stylee...
