Hi. Iam not a happy chappy. Brought a brand new 5D MkII, 3 weeks ago,(now that the prices have come down considerably), sold my old 50D to a friend and now the new 5D MkII has died. I presume it is the sensor.
Fiddling with Live View the other night I noticed some bright momentary flashes on the screen - thought that's strange, then took a 5 second movie. On replay a red pixel through out the movie - ahh a hot pixel - thats not good. Started doing another movie and the screen started getting red purple and blue horizontal lines across it. Now all I get is a black photo with a red fringe around it. So now I have to go through the long proceedure of applying for a Return Authority Number and wait and wait and wait for it to be repaired or replaced. Problem is I bought it to go on holidays in a few weeks time - Why did I have to sell my 50D so quickly - boo hoo sob sob.

That sucks to hear, i can imagine the horror of it. But since you mentioned it's new i assume you still have warranty on it so you should consider yourself lucky. It would be far worse without warranty.

Action photo if there is any problems with delay with Canon then you should be able to rely on the Australian consumer law specifically s54/55 which relate to merchantable quality and fitness for purpose. The whole 7 day return period bull dust that some companies advertise is actually against the law in Aus. Assuming you've only owned it for a short time and it's valid Aus stock then you should have a claim. You should be able to get a replacement

Getting a bit of the run around. Even though it was not purchased from a recoginsed Canon dealer, Canon were prepared to fix it but DWI (australia - the seller) would not let Canon repair or replace it. DWI insisted it be returned to their agent ATECH in Sydney. But as it turned out they only return it to Hong Kong for it to be repaired or replaced. So now it is the waiting game. I should have paid the extra and purchased it from an Australian Canon Dealer.

Sorry to hear about that. :(

Here in the state Canon always had a quick turn around with my 1DIII, about 2 weeks total for a mirror box update, cleaning and metering problem.

If you are in driving distance to one there you might want to bring it in to avoid shipping.

Hi all,
Well it is now over 4 weeks and still no camera. I am getting very anxious as I go on a photographic holiday to North Quesnsland Australia in mid August.
I have contacted the repair centre to ask when it will be ready but they dont bother replying.
TO ALL YOU AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS i RECOMMEND YOU DO NOTBUY ANY PRODUCT FROM DWI.
I may have to buy a cheaper model body only (60D or 7D), so as I have a camera for my trip.
I will keep you posted as to my progress.

Gray market BURN. That really stinks. The whole thing sounds shady, I wonder if your 5D2 was even really brand new.

But hey, the 60D is a very nice camera for the price!

As I read it the CPS is strictly for Pro 'Image Makers' and as such is not a valid service for the enthusiastic amateurs amongst us.

Sorry about this mate... why is it so complicated to replace an under warranty camera in AU?

Please keep us informed in how long it takes to get it back. Hoefully, reporting on your bad situation will help someone avoid it down the road.
