Hello,

This is my first post on these forums, I hope I post in the right place.

I have an old 28-70 f/2.8 L USM Lens, that I have not used recently, but since one of my friends asked me to make some portraits of her, that she could upload to facebook, I took my old and loved lens out for a shooting. (I have not used it, because I have a 24-105, and mostly used that as an all-round lens.)

So while shooting I had some problems with the 28-70, with very strong glare, coming from backlight.

I tought it must be the lights, and tried different angles, but at home I took some comparison pictures, and there is really some problem.

In this picture I have taken 2 shoots of my monitor, with my curtain as background. (Sun shining through).
I compared the 28-70 f2.8 to the 50mm f/1.8, both at 1/60sec, 50mm, and 2.8.

You can see the difference on the top left egde of the monitor.

I have no ideas what might cause this problem, maybe some of you could help me.

Thank you.

Well, the lens seems clear for me, it has some (micro) scratches, but I have seen much worse lensen.

As for fungus, how to spot that?

I used a lamp or flashlight and look through the lens at different angles.

Thanks for the tip.

Btw.: Could this be caused by the Coating? (Or the lack of it)

So, does anyone know, if this "effect" can be caused by the coating?

Wild guess: Take off the cheap UV filter.

I did not use an UV filter for the shots.

I have the same problem. Even stronger than you. How did you resolved it? I consider to send the lens to specialized service to repair it.

I presume you mean flare.
Try using a lens-hood if you haven't already.
You have also to be aware that a complex, many element zoom lens will be more likely to show flare than a simple prime lens - just one of those things.
