Shot at f/2.8, focus on the runner. The first basemen seems a bit soft. DOF? should I have gone to f4 or deeper?

C&C please.

Can i ask why did you link a photo of yours, when it is a completely different situation to the photo posted by the OP?

As Rick said, from this crop it's hard to tell for sure, but it does not look OOF to me.

And yes I would suggest f/4 or f/5 if you have the light. As you can see there is very little subject separation at f/2.8 at that distance and focal length. Shooting across the field I'll not start seeing separation until around 300mm so that is when I'll start opening it back up. But a good rule...if you are shooting plays at the plate and or bases, f/4 to be safe. If you are shooting isolated players (pitchers, pop fly or ground balls) open it up. You'll have plenty of time to make that switch typically after the ball is hit and before the offensive player makes the play if you practice.

Here is a shot very close to yours (135mm, similar distance maybe 5 feet closer to the action, and similar background distance) but shot at f/4. Separation is slight, but acceptable.

Here is 400mm at f/2.8. You'll notice a lot more separation due to the longer FL, and the greater distance from the background. Since it's an isolated player shot wide open.

The original post is way too loose. Shoot tight, crop tighter, include a face.

I agree with the others, get in tighter and stop down for a sharper pic

the XSi can get good baseball pics (if you're inside the park and close enough !)
