I've never had a proper public showing of any of my photos and just in the last week managed to assemble a selection of about 15 that I'd love to show at my erstwhile City's art gallery. The city is Mississauga (in Ontario, Canada) and has a sizeable population (~700,000), but not that vibrant of an arts scene. In a sense this helps--I actually feel like I can approach them. On the other hand, it's most likely that my series won't be of interest to them because although all the photos were shot in Mississauga, they don't exactly serve as tourist postcards of famous landmarks.

Does anyone have experience showing photos at a city gallery ? Any suggestions about how I approach this ? Should I try to have a showing at a smaller venue to bring interest ? Should I do a write-up for the series ? Does it make sense to have at least one print to show them ?

I'm utterly inexperienced in this area, and I'd appreciate any suggestions you guys have.

thanks !

It appears not.

I'd say the one worry is that straight away you're saying that the photos may not interest them. If you can't convince yourself they're not interesting, you won't convince them. What is it about the images that makes them worth exhibiting?

I say the photos may not interest them because it's possible they may value postcards rather than work that is doing something in a more subtle manner--but who knows. And I sincerely think that if I became fully convinced that I was doing something interesting, that my work was great--well, I'd say I'd be in serious trouble ! I'm full of self-doubt--it informs everything that I do, sometimes in arguably good ways. I'm deeply suspicious of artists who are fully confident in what they are doing.

The question may be: am I willing to play the game for the end that I'd like ?
