I traded my old 30d for a lightly used 40mm pancake and it arrived this afternoon. I was honestly surprised by just how small it is, but it seems to be pretty sharp wide open and the quality is quite good!

One of the first test shots taken whilst making dinner earlier tonight...

Keith: You surprised me with that 100mm pancake. Took a moment to digest:)

I remember on The Days of 30D, had to spend just $330 to repair shutter module of my 30D... Now you can only trade it for about $150... I better buy more lens and less bodies!

Will be interested to hear your comments of how it performs on your 5Dc Keith.

I have it on a 5Dc. It's nice. Very. Most of the time f/2.8 is enough for me, both in terms of light and DoF control. If you enjoy the FL (I strongly prefer the 35ish range to the 50ish range), I think that you're going to have to spend about 6x the money for better, and even then you're sacrificing the nice compactness of the 40.

Bill is my name - I'm the most wanted man on my island, except I'm not on my island, of course. More's the pity.

Thanks Bill. I'm thinking for the money it may just slip nicely in between the 28 & 50mm I currently have :)

Not to take anything away from the pic (it's great) or the 40 (I love it), but you can do the faux-tilt miniatures with just about any lens.

that`s true, bet 40mm is worth it $$ - small, sharp

hah I have the same bag. I might have to try your tripod method, since my 40D+40mm fit in the side padded areas fine! Nice bike too :)

Thanks - I love my Diavel. Yeah, the tripod in this bag works really well. I tried using a regular backpack for a while but the tripod was too loose in there.

I had a few people asking me about this over on the Diavel forum, so I made a post and the gear photo you quoted was shot for that write up, you can check it out if you're interested: http://www.diavel-forum.com …slr-gear-on-a-motorcycle/ (external link)

Fitting the Panckae mounted on the camera in the side padding definitely shouldn't be an issue. It barely protrudes past the camera body!

Love the Diavel! Thats it, my Monster 696 is getting shot this weekend! I strap the tripod to lashings that are on my backpack when I ride and have the camera.

does anyone feel like they take their camera out more because this lens is on it?
I'm thinking about getting it for the sheer portability. the sigma 50 1.4 is small, but not that small..

I brought this lens with me for a two days out-of-town indoor social lens, but its not my outdoors lens. If I'm not wearing my 70-300 outdoors its my 85.

I like the 40 for indoors and product photography

Same here. Outdoors it's my 85. Indoor and product photography it's my 40.
