I'm considering picking one of these up as a standard for my EOS-1. I'll also play around with it on the 60D though, of course. What do you guys think of the focal length on a crop?

I read somewhere on this thread that a firmware upgrade may be needed. So when I googled it. It says"How to determine if this firmware update is needed: If the third digit in the EF 40mm STM Lens serial number is a 0, 1 or 2, the firmware update is needed: xx0xxxxxxx, xx1xxxxxxx, xx2xxxxxxx Otherwise, firmware version 1.2.0 or later has already been installed in the lens." (external link)

Guess what? Mine is 89xxxxxxx

so what firmware am I really upgrading? I bought this lens last Dec. 24th and the post that I read was last Aug. I would have assumed that any new lens would have been upgraded already.

You have to keep in mind it could've been sitting in the store/warehouse for a long time before you bought/ordered it.

try to find somebody with a T4i or other recent body so you can update the lens firmware.

or send it in to Canon who will service it free

or, as I have done so far because its not been a debilitating hassle... live with it ;)

I mean aside from the obvious. The upgrade were more than just superficials.
It could affect the store's warranty returns.
"pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working." (external link)

Don't get me wrong. I'm not running around yelling the sky is falling. But I was just surprised of the slowness of action from the local store'or distributor's part.

I like the send it to canon option but most likely I'll live with it. Especially now that I know. It's my new toy. I'm enjoying playing with it.
Cheers

On the 6D wide open. EXIF and GPS should be there.

This is great! How are you liking it on the 6D? Sharp wide open? I'm returning my nifty-fifty in place of the 40 as on my 5DMII, my 50 isn't really as sharp as I want it until 2.8 anyway. Everyone says the 40 is sharp at 2.8, has a better build, nearly silent and faster focus. Seems like a no brainer?

It's my favorite lens on the 6D. It's very sharp wide open and it is better than my 50mm f1.4 in my opinion.

Good to hear! Do you find it difficult to hold the camera with the 40 attached? Seems like it's sooooo small that it may be awkward?

No not at all, the 6D is smaller than my 7D and with the Pancake lens attached it's almost like a full size point and shoot. I really love the combo and I think the little 40mm lens is the best bang for the buck on the market right now.

My wife got me some rolls of film for Christmas. I used the 40mm to do a little impromptu shoot to celebrate. BTW, I have been renting the Canon 50mm 1.4 for the past week. I have to say, although I got some nice keepers and the extra 2 stops is great for low light, the 40mm is so much more solidly built and the focus accuracy is much more reliable. Thought about returning the 40 in exchange for the 50...nope.

This is awesome to hear. Can't wait to try this lens. For $150, sounds like it's the best bang for the buck out there right now.
