I've been using this meter for a while and its behave impecably, but recently its not giving me the right numbers. :( at 1/100 iso 100 in full sun its showing f8! its the same with strobe, its consistently showing about half of what it should be.

I don't believe I've changed anything on the meter, just doing my usual thing.

my settings are...
analog switch = f-No
digital swtich= f-No
normal/analyze=normal
single/multi= single

anyone have any pointers to check?

The Minolta Autometer IVf has a metal pin that sticks out from the face of the receptor area. This serves as a sensivity switch to tell the meter if the reflected light attachment is installed, rather than the normal hemisphere (or flat disk). This switch's electrical contacts has been known to act up, and sometimes you can revive the switch simply by removing the hemisphere, and pressing in and then releasing the pin multiple times in rapid succession.

You can check that the switch is working properly by pressing in the pin and taking a reading, then releasing the pin and taking another reading...the readings should differ with pin in vs. with pin out.

Give this man a cigar, absolutely spot on :) fixed and working now.

Thanks, really appreciate it.

Glad to provide a simply solution for a problem! You might or might not eventually need to replace the switch, but I don't know if anyone can...unless they use another Autometer IVf to scrounge for parts...the current Kenko 1100 is the Minolta Autometer Vf rebadged, and the sensivity switch is entirely different on the Vf

OTOH, if the issue is merely switch contacts oxidizing, opening up the receptor housing and cleaning the contacts might well fix the problem for a long while.
