Saw this posted by member sjms on FM a few days ago: Gitzo have extended their Ocean design to include series-2, 3 and 5 systematics. They look like nice designs, pretty flash actually.

I can see pros who work in seriously rough environments using them but for the rest of us...

I wonder how much they're going to cost?

I can answer that - more.

But they do look nice.

Wow, those are beautiful looking, but probably will be way overpriced like the past Ocean series has been. Too bad as I would probably upgrade!

I just don't understand Gitzo. Why do they keep on insisting on getting that ballhead with their 1 series? I'd order the Ocean 1-series right now if it wasn't for the fact that I have to buy a ballhead at the same time.

I guess they will charge an arm and a leg for these...or in this case three legs...Lol!
Even the current systematic prices are crazy for something that I would expect to be a default feature in a premium product. IE weather / salt water resistant.

I don't know how to spell out a whistle sound, but that's the sound I'm making.

Yes, the ballhead they sell with the series-1 brings the max load way down but it is ruggedized like the tripod. Maybe the assumption is that you use it with a Nikonos or something. If I were to buy a series-1 I'd just sell the ballhead and put a Q3T on it. They're flogging these without a head so I guess you're supposed to keep the tripod base above water...

Its a marketing thing I bet. Their Traveler 1 series has done very well, but they probably know no one is using their ballheads, so if they force people to buy their head with the tripod they want, more than likely they will try it (if they buy it) and hopefully think its good enough and keep it. Thats the only logic I can come up with behind it.

I've often looked at the Ocean Traveller as a "one boot size that fits no-one" type of approach. It's too expensive for such a poor level of stability...plus the added irritation of a non Arca-swiss type of clamp, which precludes it from any serious consideration in my opinion.

I sold my series 1 head on ebay - utterly useless on the 1155T (pioneer here ! ;) ) , but people will pay silly money for anything Gitzo .

Trouble is, Gitzo won't pay you for the hassle of selling redundant accessories .

Frankly, I won't buy another Gitzo Traveller till they got their lineup in order.

I hear ya. Thankfully I have my Gitzo needs squared away for many years to come. :)
