Bringing my T3i to cabo?

We are leaving for Cabo in the middle of July for 5 nights. We are staying at a resort and I'm kind of wary about bring my camera. I have the 18-135 on it, nothing else, yet. Planning on getting either a 35, 50, or new 40mm prime before the trip. We have 2 iPhone 4s' and 2 Sony point and shoots (1 is about 5 years old and the other is about a year old) that we could take instead. I'd obviously much rather take the DSLR.

I'm mainly worried about it getting stolen or sand messing it up. Albeit the rooms reportedly have safes in them. If anyone has experience with Cabo and their camera much input is appreciated.

Thanks.

although i haven't been in a couple years...i feel like cabo is really safe...i mean it's like anywhere though, you'll still want to watch your stuff, and not leave it lying on the beach while you go into the ocean for a swim...so take care of it and you'll be ok...i'd go for a 35mm lens too

you could always look into insurance if you are still worried about theft

oh, and if some guy with monster sized hands comes up to you downtown playing a guitar...don't even talk to him...or he'll try and swindle you out of $20...

Just take your T3i, and use common sense. If you are out during the day on a sightseeing trip, keep the camera near you at all times, and don't look like a target.

If your resort is anything like a Marriott, you don't need to worry about theft. I can tell you the safes in the rooms are not big enough to fit a dSLR, but you can store it in a safety deposit box at the front desk if you are really worried about it. I just got back from Athens, Greece and was very worried about theft -- it all turned out not to be true, everything was fine.

In terms of beach use, I would not take it to the beach -- sand and salt water do not play well with a dSLR. Go get a Canon D10 instead. You can get it wet or sandy and it will still work fine. I've got one, and yeah it only takes JPG shots, but they turn out great. Plus you can use it underwater for those snorkeling trips.

*sigh*

I mean I am not suggesting you just drop your camera in the sand and roll it around, but there is no reason not to take a DSLR to the beach. I use my DSLR's the majority of the time in a saltwater environment here in South Florida, and have for years, and I never have had any specific problems from it.

Get insurance. Use your camera. Stop thinking about it.

Why own something so nice to be afraid to take it out?

I was there in 2008 (Riu Palace), took my 40d with 10-20, 17-70 and 70-200, locked it in the safe when I wasn't using it. Lots of nice spots for pictures there so do bring it.

It was safe in 08 but use common sense. The sand is not very fine there, you won't have a problem unless you drop your camera.

Thanks for the input. Went ahead and bought the 40mm 2.8 stm yesterday. Only messed around with for an hour or so. I just really like it because it's so much lighter than my kit 18-135.

After reading, I'm definitely am going to take it. You guys would advise carry-on, correct?

I never check camera equipment. Actually, I have checked my Yongnuo flash, and of course it is now malfunctioning.

Never let your gear off of your person (except to go through the xray of course). I always carry on.

So I bought the 40mm and love the size! Do you guys think that it will be good enough for 6 days in cabo or should I lunk along the 18-135 as well?

I've been to Cabo 6 times in the past 8 years and have brought my entire kit down each and every time. No problems bringing my stuff. We stay at the Presidente in San Jose Del Cabo.

You just don't get things like this with your P&S:

And when I say the "entire kit", I mean the entire kit - full-size tripod and all. You don't get pictures like this without a long shutter (6 minutes in this case), and you don't take 6 minute exposures without a tripod:
