Hey Gang!

First off, let me tell you -- my photography motivation and activity has taken some serious hits over the past few years. I won't bore you with the details, but suffice it to say that especially over most of the past year, I just haven't gotten out to photograph much. Part of it was the loss of my car a year ago. I did get some motivation going with my "Biking Photog project, but that died down...

Anyway, this year, as the weather warms up, I've been getting some "inspiration". One thing that helped was to hook up with some POTN shooters for a meetup in April in downtown Portland to do some street photography. Street photography is something I do enjoy, but getting there is the challenge. We did have a blast, though:

http://www.pbase.com …r_28_2012_portland_meetup (external link)

Then, a few things seem to be coming together. For one thing, I'm trying to get out on my bike there, with my photo gear in my backpack, although it has been a bit challenging (more below).

Then, a couple items! First, a friend posted a Facebook notice about an event/concert in downtown Vancouver, and an invitation by one of the "sponsors", the Vancouver Downtown Association, for photographers to participate in the summer's activities/events on a volunteer basis, no money, but a chance to maybe get some "notice" and publication. Well, I decided to join in, and began some contact with the director, and then showed up on Saturday and shot some photos!

And then, something else came to my attention. I have for some years been a "member" of Meetup, with the idea that I would get involved with a Photography Mettup group, although that died down along with my other photography motivations. But, I do get Meetup mailings. In one that showed up just a week ago, there was a note about a couple Vancouver hiking/walking groups engaging in activities that I could easily get to, and in some nice places, like the Columbia River waterfront, nice parks, etc.

So, I did show up Sunday, but was rushed and didn't grab my photo gear! But I'm going to another one, an "evening" walk today at 7:00 PM so it will still be light enough for some photos...

But, I had a long weekend facing challenges! Here is a post I made about it on Facebook:

Well, this afternoon I'm declaring the end of a long, busy, hectic weekend!

It started on Thursday when I set out on a bike ride of several miles with some camera gear, heading for a wetlands a few miles away. But, before I got even halfway, I got a flat tire! I had to walk the bike down to a main road where I could catch the bus.

Friday, I got a new innertube in the tire, thinking I was good to go.

Saturday I had a couple things going on. In the morning, I took off on the bike to run an errand. In the afternoon I had a major local event to photograph. But halfway through my morning ride, the rear tire went crazy! It turns out that when the inner tube went flat it shredded the part of the tire that "sticks" in the wheel and holds it in!

Again, walk and grab a bus and walk it home, then I quickly had to grab a but to the event downtown where I did shoot! Then yesterday I was busy all day -- a Meetup of local hikers/walkers, and then spending Father's Day afternoon and evening with "extended family".

Well, today I put a new tire on the ol' Mountain Bike and everything seems to be up and running! I'm done, and just in time -- tomorrow I have another hiking/walking meetup, and I plan to ride the dang bike to get to it!

Anyone who is interested in event photography (and some Street photography) is welcome to check out my "collection" from yesterday, 87 pics processed and posted out of 267 shots taken!

Well, hopefully things have settled in!

FYI, here's the link to my Saturday "festival" shoot:

Oh, and if you want a chuckle, go to the "front page" of that event shoot and go down to the bottom and see the comment left by Lee, the VDA director:)!

Hey, thanks for the good wishes! Hopefully this year, at least into the summer and through the fall, will be both fun and productive!

I'm keeping an eye out on some light precipitation -- I really don't want to get caught in the rain trying to make it to the Meetup (happening in about 2 hours)!

Great news Tony. Better get moving, I just pulled up the dopler radar and it doesn't look great (spotty rain all over the area).

Well, dang!

But at least the clouds have been breaking up here, and I have less than two miles to ride. I'd just better not get another flat tire!!

OK, here's my report from yesterday:

First the "drama" -- about half way there, one of the nuts holding my back tire went a bit loose and the tire jammed against the frame and I couldn't ride! This is the wheel that I had needed to replace first a blown innertube and then a couple days later the actual tire, so I guess I just couldn't crank the nut hard enough.

I was quite some ways away from any kind of business that might have any tools, so for the third time this week I had to walk/push my bike, at least a half mile today, until I got to a gas station. They didn't have a shop, but the guy behind the counter was able to dig out a wrench, I tightened the nut, and was on the road again!

Amazingly, I made it to the Meetup in time, and we headed out walking. Actually right now walking like that is a chore for me 'cause I have a "gimpy" ankle that hasn't bounced back yet, but I "gimped" along as we walked a couple miles, although I couldn't keep up with the speed of the other six members of the group.

But I did get some photos, it was a nice day with sun and clouds and such! I haven't unloaded them and worked on them yet, but at least today I actually worked on three of my current "challenges", to get out more on my bike, to Meetup with walkers/hikers, and to take photos as part of both of those activities!

Well, I only got a few shots from the hiking/walking MeetUp,

A couple of the "scene" while we were waiting for people to arrive:

IMAGE: http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/144205625/original.jpg

Five of the seven hikers (plus a dog) in the late afternoon sun:

IMAGE: http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/144205626/original.jpg

And then, we were off! I was lagging behind, because of a "gimpy" ankle, so I made use of the distance by grabbing some pics:

(DUPLICATE IMAGE)

And then, a friend alerted me to another event, a "drum circle and belly-dancing" get together that happened yesterday and is not scheduled every Wednesday throughout the summer, at a little "ampitheater" adjacent to a big city park and bordering the community college. I went and stayed a couple hours and took over 300 photos, even though it is too early in the process to have attracted a lot of people. I haven't processed the photos yet and have another hiking/walking meetup to go to in a bit, so...

But also, even though I took a bus most of the way to the "drumming circle" to make sure I made it on time and to get myself oriented to the place, I brought my bike and rode it the 7 or so miles back home.

So, another day out as a Biking Photog!

If anything I think you may have just inspired me to drag my bike out of my shed and get my fat out of shape butt back on it with a camera on my back. :)

Great photos too!

Thanks Sam! I think my summer is getting off to a good start! I just signed on to another hiking/walking MeetUp group, this one at a nearby dual-lake area that is a place I like!

Thanks for the compliment, and yeah, it does take some "inspiration" to get that bike out and get on it, but doing it with photography in mind means a lot!

I may have to ride it a few times before I trek out with a camera on my back. I just drove to the end of our road (.5 miles) and rode back and was completely wiped out.

5 years ago I could ride 10 miles every other day. I am truly out of shape.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but over the past week I've probably ridden 15 miles, each time packing camera gear!
