I want to upgrade to 7 D body but hear a lot that it gives noise beyond ISO 400 . What is the correct finding.

I will be using 70-300 L lens with it if upgraded.

Thanks.

Jai.

Hard to say what your expectations are here. One of my favourite shots is at ISO 6400 printed at 8x10 inches with minimal pp. I upgraded from a 50d and found the 7d a nice bit better. Check the 7d pictures form and you will see many pictures @ ISO 400 and up.

Out of curiosity, what body do you own currently? Even the most basic of beginner bodies don't show noticeable noise at ISO 400, so it's weird to think a high end DSLR such as the 7D would.

Of course even the highest level bodies (1Dx, 5D3) show noise at higher levels, but how high are YOU planning to use?

You've already tried searching the forum on this, yes?

Because it's been done to death already...

Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!

Presently I am using 50 D. At the higher end ISO usage should be from 1000 to 1600.

Here is an ISO test I did years ago, you can view the original uploads, however I did reduce the size of these (bandwidth issue back then).

It might help give you an indication of what is acceptable to you

If you plan to pixel peep exclusively, and are only concerned about what your images look like at 1:1 resolution on your monitor, then there might be concern at the higest ISO settings on the 7D. If you are going to print images or view them at normal resolutions on screens, don't worry about this issue.:)

Unless you're actually taking pictures it's silent. The shutter noise is louder than my 450d but not annoyingly so...
Oh I see what you mean :-)
I upgraded from a 450d and was a bit worried about noise but that's usually only a real problem on ISOs higher than I was used to. Depends on the situation and ambient light plus the noise that is there for some reason responds really well to LR denoise.

400? Nah. However for me, 1600 was pushing it.

I've gotten acceptable results (for me) as high as ISO 6400 on the 7D. However, I am not a pixel peeper.

That ISO 204800 is totally unusable. What a piece of junk. ;)

To the OP, at ISO 1600 and even 3200 you should have no issues assuming that you get the exposure correct. Even the 40D did fine to ISO 3200 properly exposed. At 6400 you'll start seeing noise and will have to use some noise reduction in post if you're shooting raw.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Here is one example of pixel peeping when it comes to "Lenses". There are all sorts of types, but usually it's the 400% crops that can kinda get to people.
