I have no idea how you macro guys do your magic, but here are a couple of my best attempts using my D700 with 24-70 f/2.8 and 36mm Kenko tube. I used off camera flash (hand-held). Honestly, I'll admit that I don't know what I'm doing an would love any advice you may have on how to improve. Exif is intact.

These little guys sure don't stay put to pose :)

I think you have done brilliantly. The lght may be little harsh, but that may also be my monitor on this PC (not my normal one).

I get about 1 shot per 50 bees that are in frame, yet alone in focus :(

Thanks Bas! I think I didn't balance flash with ambient very well, or maybe just using a single flash is the wrong approach. Taking portraits of my family is sooo much easier than this!

My success rate sounds similar to yours, but I get very few with the bees eye in focus (or close to being in focus).
