Hi guys,

I currently have a 400D, and I'm soon going to be in the market for a new camera.
So far I'm tossing up between a 5D Mk2 or a 60Da.

I like a few features of both, mainly the flip screen and sensor for astrophotography.
I'm pretty interested in astrophotography so it looks like a great camera for me.

BUT! This is where I am asking for advice.

The 5D Mk2 has a bigger sensor, will this mean higher quality photos?
I seriously doubt I will ever print the 18megapixel photos at 1:1 let alone the 22megapixel of the 5D. But will the sensor be a higher quality photo than the other?

So the basic question is... What is the difference between the APS-C Crop Sensor and the 35mm Full Frame?
And what do you think the pros and cons are for each one?

Hi Blake, there is a sub forum here in POTN that talks about astophotography.
I think you'll get better answers there.

I dont know that the 60da is very good for normal photography with the changes to the sensor.
You should check into that.

on the canon website i believe there is some fine print at the bottom that says the 60Da is not suitable for regular photograpy because a good color balance may not be achieved.

makes it kindof a one trick pony, if you ask me....

I expect you could get some filters for the lenses that would filter out the IR range that would normally be filtered out by the standard IR filter on the 60D.

then i guess the real question is do you want to mess with that?
how much are you looking into doing astrophotography? if not a lot, is it worth the price of a new 60Da or would it make more since to get a previous model modded?

People put UV and CPL filters on their lenses all the time, so I don't see it being a big deal to have a filter on all the time, then the one lens you use for night shots of the sky, you would not have a filter on it. But good point on the used and modded comment, definitely might be cheaper to get an XSi or something along those lines and have it altered to replace the IR cut filter.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I was really leaning towards the 60Da, but after learning that it may not be that great for normal photography. That turns me off it a fair bit.

I'm into astrophotography, but not so much that I want to buy a dedicated camera for it.

With a 5D MkII, are you able to hook it up to a laptop to show the live view on the monitor?

Yes, with the included software EOS Utilities, you can tether the camera to a computer for use with Live View photography.:)
