Hi. I use the Canon 300mm F.4L with a 1.4 pt1 Teleconverter on my Canon 7D. The lens on its own is at its best at F8. I was wondering what aperture people think is best when attached to the 1.4 TC? Still F8 or down to 9,10? Any thoughts appreciated!

When you've got an itch... (Young black-tail mule deer buck) EF 300mm f4 IS lens with EF 1.4X II teleconverter, effective f8 aperture. EOS 5D Mark II at ISO 1600, 1/250 shutter speed. Handheld or monopod, available light (no flash). Except that background bokeh sometimes isn't quite as nice because OOF highlights tend to get a little busy. Wide open the aperture is perfectly round. Stopped down it's octagonal (newer lens designs such as used on the 300/2.8 IS and 70-200/2.8 IS use curved aperture blades that make for a little smoother background blur). The image example below isn't using the teleconverter, but it's largely the same with or without it... The busy background in this image needed quite a bit of toning down in Photoshop (added blur and burned down the highlights), due to the way the lens rendered it at f5.6... Determination EF 300mm f4 IS lens at f5.6. EOS 7D at ISO 400, 1/2500 shutter speed. Handheld, avail. light. Alan Myers
