The lens is apparently available from the Canon store online and mine will be in my hands tomorrow. I already have the T4i and the 40mm stm

It would be cool if you could focus on something at 135mm and then zoom out to 18mm and see if the focus is retained.

I'll do that. I'm waiting to see if the Canon store was fibbing about it being an STM. Supposed to have a 67mm filter ring, but there is no lens shade available at this time, unless there is one for the earlier version.

I have much to learn about this lens and camera combination. At 18mm in bright light a defined edge may have some pretty obvious CA.

There are a couple more here, and I will post more as I go along. Seeing the results of a focus while videoing is very cool. I'll post some of those soon on Youtube.

If this lens is parfocal then it'll probably find its way into my bag as a video lens. I reckon that the focal length range, super-IS, FTM focusing and a reasonable price will make it too tempting. I may even end up selling the 24-105.

I don't think it is FTM...I also kind of doubt it is parfocal as the T4i will be able to just keep adjusting the focus as you zoom so Canon wouldn't have to design the lens to be that way.

Yeah, it has some for sure, the pic of the people eating, look at the pole in the upper right, and that is stopped down to f/10, also I see it in your space coast shot. The non-STM has the same issue. What other lenses do you have to try on it? Curious how a Ring USM reacts to the full time AF in video.

My wife refused me posting a video of her while we were trying out the new mexican restaurant, so Ill have to see if the grand girls will cooperate tomorrow.

I suspect this lens is a test on Canon's part. Don't think this is improved other than for video. I'll post from different lens tomorrow.

18-135 STM and 15-85 IS compared here: http://www.lensrentals.com …m-is-gets-an-stm-makeover (external link)

Unfortunately it appears the 18-135 isn't so hot on the wide end.

Yeah, from that writeup, it sounds a lot like the old 18-135. I guess that's why MTF only tells half the story.

Here's the video, warts and all, that I shot this morning, three clips showing how long it took to find focus under different conditions. Once focus was set, it worked better zooming out than zooming back in. I certainly became more aware of my own shortcomings as a videographer.

Heres one of my daughter chasing bubbles, I don't hear the lens at all. For comparison there's one in the videos with an F4L 24-105mm.

A self-portrait the 18-135 STM and Canon T4i. I had a confrontation with an RV awning retracting arm 6 days ago. While I have a surprisingly hard head, the skin is fragile, what with no hair to buffer blows.

Don't doubt- it's not FTM. Actually- it's fly by wire- and electrically disconnected from what I can tell- when the switch is in AF. Quite sure that it's not parfocal either. There's nothing on the lens to indicate any kind of focus movement- but you can tell it focuses a little bit from say 18 going to 135 on the same target from the same distance. Going the other way is harder to see.

OK. Yes- i know, I need to update the darn signature.
