It's been like this since day one- when I first tried it- nothing -till I put it into MF- and then it works.. Just tried it again- just like I did just before I posted earlier - and still- only works only when in MF.. thought it was normal. It has full time manual override- as long as the shutter button is half-way depressed ? To me, that would not make it full time.. I guess the 40mm pancake is the same way. Oddly enough, the manual does not suggest that at all- it tells one to change the focusing mode.. No mention of full time override- at least from what I saw. That'd be the manual on the US website- which is for the t4i/18-135 STM combo. I ain't saying that they can't or won't, but how much do you think they could drive up the price on the 18-55 if they did. What would your interests be in getting a 18-55 STM, because it's not really that great of a lens, has certain design limitations already ( filter assy that moves ), and is not particularly fast as far as aperture is concerned, etc.. If you can't tell, I'm glad they picked the 18-135 for STM- I'd rather have 15-85 or 18-135 over 18-55 anyday. That'd be the manual on the US website- which is for the t4i/18-135 STM combo. Thanks, Hollis for the correction. And Thanks to Charlie for the "how to". Any lens with full time manual focusing, when used in AF mode, will require holding down the shutter half way first if the shutter button is set up to control auto focus. If you change the custom settings to use back button focusing and don't use the shutter button for that purpose you will get the full time manual focus you're expecting. Lenses that do not have FTMF are simply those where the design doesn't permit manually turning the focus ring in AF mode. That's the main functional difference. While turning the focus ring on a FTMF lens will change the focus, it does not override AF. If after manually focusing you auto focus using the shutter button, it will change focus, which is logical is you think about it. Mark
