Fill Flash question 430ex II

Alright, a while back I bought a new 430ex II. I haven't had a whole lot of time to play around with it but lets say I would like to use it outdoors to add a little flash fill on a sunny day. I've tried to find info on how to exactly do this but I guess I can't grasp it.

So my question is how do I set the flash to a less powerful level to achieve this? Exact instructions for this newbie would be nice. Sorry if this has been asked before but I just can't find the instructions myself.

I appreciate any responses.

On a sunny day, you are likely going to need to put the flash in HSS mode. Depending on your camera, and how the custom function settings are set, your camera may default in auto modes to 1/250 sync speed. That can cause you to either use small apertures, or perhaps overexpose. HSS lets you sync at higher speeds. Use the Flash exposure compenation on the flash in ETTL mode to -2/3 to start and then adjust so the fill you get is what you want.

Ok but how do you exactly use exposure compensation on the flash to adjust the mode -2/3. In the meantime I will google this and see if there are steps given.

There's a quick guide for the 430EXII on Canon's website, see the following ..

It explains how to put the flash in HSS mode, as well as how to dial in FEC in ETTL mode. If you want complete control of flash, you can always put the flash into manual mode.

Remember that you are actually controlling a balance of two exposures, the ambient exposure and the flash exposure
