Just curious- how do you measure a third of infinity?

א sub zero divided by 3

Georg Cantor, Arithmetic of Infinities

Aleph sub zero = Set (or infinity or cardinality) of all whole numbers (or even numbers, odd numbers or regular fractions, all the same size)
Aleph sub one = Set of all points on a line, or all points in square, or all points in a cube or all decimal fractions (again, all the same size)
Aleph sub two = Set of all curves (including those of unusual shape)

Including the sun directly in an image can be problematic because it skews the tonal distribution but in a very small portion of the overall image. Sometimes it may be better to take a single exposure just for the sun and blend it into the HDR merge with a layer mask.

Nice. If the only flaw someone can come up with is that it's overcooked, you are moving in the right direction.

The last image is pretty nice. It needs a little cleanup though. There's a stray branch at the upper left that should be cloned out. There's also something strange in the sky near the center of the image. It appears as a "bar" in the cloud. It also needs correction of the horizon. There's much less vertical lean on the left side than the right. You could rotate to equalize, or possibly even apply lens correction to overcome some of the wide angle properties.

Not sure if anyone's watching this thread but I'd like to see if I can get some more insight.

In the middle of this page, there are 6 awesome pics by jacobsen1. I'd like to see if someone can give insight on how they would have metered and shot them especially #2 (external link) since it actually has the sun beautifully exposed and everything else as well. I guess what I am asking for is what three (or more) areas would you have chosen to meter, and why?

#5 (external link) is also very interesting since it has loads of dark/light contrast.

Here's my amateur (handheld) attempt from yesterday .. 3 shots 1EV apart, imported via photomatix and tweaked in CS5

Infinity has a number. It's called Pi.

Trying to get to the end of it will have you running in circles.

Your pics look great, and by your gear list it's tough to believe you're a noob.

Thank you. bw!

Thanks Mike; much appreciated :)

Not too sure if gear list means anything at all though .. and you're right, I may not be a true 'noob', but compared to the gurus on this forum, I am :)

He uses GND filters to even out the exposure across the frame. He probably metered the foreground rocks, the water and a couple spots in the sky in #2. He then calculates the variance in dynamic range in fstops and uses that to choose the number and strength of the filters to use. I am no expert but it looks like 2 in this case. One where the dark area goes from the top of the frame to just below the sun and a second from the top of the frame to around the horizon. So for example he might have a 5 stop difference between the area around the sun and the foreground rocks. But the difference around the horizon to the rocks is only 3 stops. He would stack a 3 stop and 2 stop filter in his holder. The two stop gradient would be adjusted to covering the top of the frame to just beneath the sun. The three stop gradient stops at the horizon. So you would have 5 stops to the sun, three stops to the horizon and clear below that. Then he exposes for the rocks.

Click on the link in his sig and he talks about what he uses and has some more example photos. Good stuff. Scary thing is he says the similar pictures in the thread are straight out of camera with no PP. I just got my Lee set a few weeks back, but have not had much of an opportunity to use them yet. They are pretty sweet based on the few test shots I took though.
