Canon photographer refuses to give up his camera (looks like a gripped 5DII on the video) to robbers at gun point in Dallas. I'd give mine up, he must reaaaaaaaaaaaly love his camera.

It would be funny if the robbers were Nikon photographers.

I've often thought of being in a situation like that, and what I'd do.

Sensible thing would be to hand anything over.. but that's not how I've played it out in my mind.

Way to go!

The only way I'd willingly give up my camera (or any other property) is if I modified the self timer to cause the camera to explode 10 seconds after it was taken from me. The camera is gone either way-might as well stain the asphalt with the flesh of a waste of a human being to prevent anyone else from being victimized. I have a special hatred for thieves, dirtballs, punks, thugs and the like.

I'm well aware that my actions could end up costing me some copays to my health insurer. This is my choice. Your choice may be different.

Have a wheelie nice day!

I saw that....he was a young guy...and said in hindsight he probably should have turned it over. Who knows?

I get in to Dallas occasionally to do some shooting and have actually wondered what I would do if confronted on the street in that same exact scenario.

I use Canon gear...have several bodies and lenses and am quite pleased with them.

I thought this thread would be about how with all the new bells and whistles on new cameras, the 5Dc is still such a killer body.

Crazy. Just give up your stuff man. Luckily he came out alive in this situation but in all cases, I'd say a persons life is worth a lot more than that.

I would just get the memory card out and give them the camera. The camera I'll get back from the insurance, the pictures not...

In my head I imagine in this situation I would take my camera strap and start swinging my camera above my head and screaming like a baboon as loud as I can. If they insist on physically grabbing it, swing it at their head as hard as you can.

Heck I don't know a better use for my camera than smashing it on a mugger's head.

Better? Maybe taking pictures. More fun? No, you're probably right.

haha, yeah I mean if he's gonna get my camera anyway might as well try to destroy it and cause them some physical pain in the meantime. Plus it would be totally unexpected.

Almost completely OP, but damn it makes me cringe seeing people shooting in those conditions without a lens hood on. I mean, I guess if you're intentionally going for flare...

I hand mine over in a heartbeat, I've was robbed at knife point when I lived in NYC in the mid-80's, trust me when I tell you that anything that can be replaced isn't worth dying over. Give it up, you can get a new one.

Totally agree Rick; I'd be really pissed but I'd hand it over in a sec. I have kids that need me and as much as I love my gear it's insignificant compared to the really important things in life.

Rick - I seriously love your posts. It's like you have experienced everything under the sun! :)

Dallas isn't so bad but, like any major city, it can get dicey pretty quick if you don't know where you're going.

Ironically, most of the really great spots are in the shady areas of town. That's when pre-visualizing a shot really comes in handy.

In all seriousness, I agree with Rick. NOTHING is worth dying over. I'd rather lose my camera than my life.
