Hi,

I got a question about my newly acquired LR4. It's doing some weird, weird things when I'm adding/copying photo's to my catalog.
What I normally do is I go: Import->Read from card->Choose destination I want it. Now, for this example I added pictures to the map 2012 - 6 (just random shots from 2012 - juni). But when going to my Library, I have TWO 2012 - 6 folders? Why's that? When I'm trying to copy the 2012 - 6 pictures into the folder that they should be in, I get an error, saying there's already pictures with an equal name there.

I don't understand what's going on. Could anyone clear this up, or is this a bug?

PS: When I'm looking for a picture I always browse through my 'Folders', is this the easiest method? Or do people use collections and stuff too?

Show us a shot of the right side panel in the Import dialog. Sounds like that is not properly set.

If I'm looking for something specific, say a Magpie in flight, I will first go to my Smart Collection 'Birds' to narrow it down, then do a search on keywords.

As to your problems importing files into LR, I have no idea, but in general when people are having 'weird things' like this happening in LR it's something in their import settings, or -more often - they added/deleted/moved/copied something outside of LR and then it gets confused.

I figured it would be something in my import settings as well, but I can't seem to find anything suspicious. And I NEVER move anything outside LR, so that's no the problem either... WEIRD!

Keywords, collections, just about anything but the folder structure…

That's what I figured, haha. I still have no clue how collections work; I should really dig a little deeper into that.

But that still leaves me with the question why my folders are so weird...!

Does it create two folders every time you import images?

The idea of collections is pretty simple. You can create as many collections and sub-collections as you want, and photos can go into multiple collections, even if you have Lightroom set up to not allow duplicates in the Folders (that's how I'm set up).

So, I have collections that are "categories" representing the various categories of the things I shoot, like Landscapes, Street/Urban Photography, Flower/Plant Photography, Family, Friends, etc. And then there are sub-folders, either with photos from individual shoots or maybe a sub-category if called for.

And, the individual photos are keyworded, so I have different ways of accessing photos.

But that still leaves me with the question why my folders are so weird...!

You know, that's an open question. Somehow, you managed to get two copies of the shoot into different places in Lightroom. To solve that, you'll have to go back and step carefully through all your options/actions.

For one thing, I don't Copy when importing from somewhere on my hard drive, I either Add (to leave things in their current location) or I Move. And, I don't allow duplicates in my Library, at least that's the option I've chosen. I don't know how far Lightroom goes to check/verify a duplicate, but then as a rule my workflow is pretty direct and basic: I use Lightroom to Import from a card/reader into a named folder on my internal "data" drive, and then after short-term work I move (not copy) the folder onto an external "library" drive. And that's it.

So I imagine there is something pretty simple that you just weren't aware of in your process of setting up that folder, I just don't have a clue as to what it was!

It looks like you actually have two "2012-6" folders (see top and bottom of panel). One one of them is under "2012" (bottom one) and I can't tell where the other one is (but you can right click and "show in explorer" or the equivalent thing for the MAC). The LR catalog is smart enough to know that you've already imported the files previously (even it there are at a different locations). When you import, check the import dialogs to make sure you're importing to desired base directory.

"Collections" have nothing to do with importing. This is done after the fact.

The weird thing is, is that the 'top' 2012 - 6 folder was created AFTER I imported the photo's to the 2012-6 folder in the master 2012 folder. When showing them in Finder, it also directs to the exact same folder. The root folder is the same, yet they show up differently in LR...

So, you're saying that when you look in Finder the 2012-6 folder under the 2012 folder shows up but not the "top level" 2012-6 folder that Lightroom shows?

I don't have a Mac and don't know if there are any "quirks" with the Mac/Lightroom system, but other than that possibility I don't have a clue.

What happens if in Lightroom you delete the top-level 2012-6 folder?

You can try that but before you do, back it up, your wouldn't want more odd and unexpected behavior messing you up!

Then, I'd try doing another Import of another shoot, very carefully stepping through things and examining all your options.

And, if any software automatically pops up (other than Lightroom) to "help", just say "NO!":)!

I guess I would check that the top and bottom "2012-6" folders have the same exact path all the way down to the root. They may only be partially the same (only the first few levels are the same). If the both folders have identical paths, then this could be a bug in Lr4. They have been a number of bugs that creep into the latest version.

So you are saying that, if you right click either folder, then choose "Show in Finder", Finder shows you the same folder in both cases? That's the one in "Originals"?

Sounds like a bug.

What happens if you right click the "duplicate" folder, then choose "Show parent folder"?
